Clever bloke, that Einstein, but could he invent relativity on a cold, rainy night in Stoke?

As OP says, the detection kit is at least half the story.

At some point he will be proved to have been missing something vital and for not being right.

I sometimes think that scientists and others working on these projects only look for the bits that fit the theories and so miss stuff that doesn't.

It all goes smoothly until you ask a physicist what a black hole is made of ...

If only I could understand Einstein's theory of Relatively to start with...that would help.

They had a program on BBC4 Einstein's Mind where I was getting it, but they have never repeated it, and I missed recording it.

I wonder what effect a ripple in space/time would have on us on Earth...or would we notice it?

As far as we are aware time always passes at the same rate wherever we are in the Universe, but that may be different from somewhere else

because time does not always pass at the same rate in the Universe, Einstein saw all this, he had a mental model of it, the maths took him

a little longer.

Unfortunately we cannot tie it in to Quantum Physics yet, the world of the very small, to get the Theory of Everything.

It must be wonderful to have a brain to be able to think on these things

There used to be a popular Penguin book called Relativity for the Layman, iirc, so how hard can it be?

The key observation is that Einstein had two: the special and general theories of relativity. The special theory deals with the special case where everything moves at constant speed, whereas the general theory has acceleration, so covers gravity.

They teach special relativity to schoolchildren in A-level Physics. The only maths you need is Pythagoras's theorem. General relativity is far, far more mathematical and is probably an option for third-year physics or applied maths students.

what about the big bang theory,it had to occur in a second of time,if there was no second of time it could not occur,so the first ever second of time had to occur before the big bang.so time had to occur before the big bang which proves that time came before the big bang.LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

It used to be accepted that people who left school early (15 or anywhere before 21) were intelligent and curious about the world. The WEA ran evening classes. The telly would have (say) AJP Taylor talking about history with just a blackboard.

Now even serious documentaries have to be fronted by a comedian or other TV star to lure us in. DJs take pride in knowing no maths.

Gravitational waves ?
Who says ? It's so far beyond the understanding of the majority of people, that it just sounds like gobbledegook.
And who's to say that it isn't ? There's an agenda ( re budget) being met here. Strange that this ' discovery ' is made on the 100 year anniversary !

Facts If we start playing silly games with science...we are truly lost. I think Gravitational Waves are genuine, perhaps they chose the date to

announce it

If the earth was sucked into a black hole it would become the size of a golf ball and weigh the same amount.

ie. The earth, even that small, would weigh more than the total weight of the US navy.
