not the world's leading connoisseur of rap or even the greatest scholar on the works of kanye, but the moment his genius was truly revealed was when he named his kid "north". i'm guessing precious few understand the brilliant reference this uber creative wordsmith crafted with his art, i'd say no writer since shakespeare, and certainly none living, could have come close to the genius needed to place two such unexpected words together to entirely change not only literature, but art. *mind*-*blown*
just to help out those who are either less educated or not in tune with the heights of kanye enlightenment, "west" (the word) is not only the last name of kanye west, it is also (it starts getting complex here) one of the four cardinal directions on the compass. here's the brilliant part, "north" it turns out is also one of the four, but put them together (brace yourself and prepare to be amazed!) and "north west" makes a whole new direction on the compass!!! AWESOME!!!

Whilst Kanye is certainly visionary and creative, his shortcoming as a rapper is his actual rapping, he is clunky and awkward. I file Jay-Z in a similar category, another who has creativity but just doesn't 'sound' right. Top dog for me is Eminem, not only terrifically creative (not so much recently but 10-15 years ago he was peerless, so much dark humour in his work), but when he raps it just flows - timing and tempo absolutely spot on.

'BILL COSBY INNOCENT!!!' Kanye West unleashes furious backlash after tweeting support for comedian who is accused of sexually assaulting more than 50 women
Rapper made the announcement Tuesday as part of a series of tweets
Comedian Sarah Silverman was among the first to come out in support of the alleged victims of Bill Cosby
Some fans called upon on West to deactivate his account
Earlier on Tuesday, a defamation case brought against Cosby's lawyer by model Janice Dickinson was dismissed
He's the king of drumming up controversy when it counts the most, and Kanye West was it again this week, declaring that 'Bill Cosby is innocent' just two days out from the release of his new album.
However the curious tweet - put up on Tuesday night as part of a series of questionable posts - may just work against the 38-year-old rapper.
Within an hour, the tweet - 'BILL COSBY INNOCENT !!!!!!!!' - received 23,000 likes and over 21,000 re-tweets, however many of the responses slammed West as inappropriate and ill-founded.
Leading the charge against the singer was comedian Sarah Silverman, who wrote online: 'Kanye!! You can't be for real. FIFTY WOMEN. With nothing to gain thanks to a statute of limitations ON RAPE. Oy.'

I take it you're not a big fan of the genre Poly, but if you're going to use cultural references to prove your point, at least try and ensure some level of accuracy.

nothing wrong with the reference, the point being prufrock was free verse, hence no set rhyme scheme (the couplet you quoted, though having ta consistent metre, does not rhyme but uses repetition as a device), as i said, eliot does not attempt a rhyme, though it would have been very easy to select one
rap is more basic, it's just spoken rhyming lyrics set to a beat

I tend to avoid the 'rap' genre given the lamentable attitudes generally displayed to women and to the courageous police officers of America.
Most of these rapping individuals would obviously benefit from a more disciplined environment, possibly serving in a military capacity, to develop some sense of civil pride and self-respect.
Occasionally though a half-decent song will emerge through the endlessly negative and repetitive anti-social attitudes that are the norm. In this fine example below, we see a qualified GP named Dre taking a Manchester City replica kit wearing friend and a group of other young people out to the beach for some sort of healthy outdoor recreation, away from the ghettoes of home. A visionary and selfless gesture that will surely be of benefit to the West Coast communities. Sadly, the vehicles they travel in appear to be in need of a comprehensive service, and an up-to-date MOT certificate.

The words "talented" and "rap" should never appear in the same sentence, imo.
Be honest - it's bl33din' awful stuff! How the hell can it be referred to as music or art?

This thread gives me the very pleasing opportunity to share my favourite ever Viz letter. I still laugh every time I read it. Enjoy:
"How come rap artist Dr. Dre can use the 'N' word on his multi-million selling albums and win a MOBO award, yet when I used it at my son's football match I was asked to leave the park? Once again, it's one law for the rich and another for the poor". Reg Ashcroft, Bradford

Here's an absolutely tragic case, which all too clearly highlights the tragic danger of this 'rapping' business.
At the start of this song we discover that either because of the child's homelife, or more likely as a result of an indulgent liberal state education, the child became completely unfit to take his place in decent society.
While other children became upstanding citizens in jobs such as the Police/Fire departments, the child named Snoop's ambition was to become what he called a 'hustla' a horrendous misspelling surely resulting from an inadequate education in an undisciplined classroom.
The song that follows it confirms that his education was wholly unsatisfactory, containing as it does a plethora of obscenities and sung in a language that only has a passing resemblance to English.
Worse still, the activities of the character in the song have seemingly caused a catalogue of social disturbances on the West Coast. The towns aren't named but given that he mentions a 'long beach' I think it's safe to assume he means Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, Crosby or, most shockingly still, Aberystwyth.

Lyrically no one is near Eminem. His word play is ridiculus and whenever he does a guest verse he's always the best on the track.

This is laughable. Eminem is head and shoulders above the 3 artists youve listed. It Was Written isn't even Nas' best album and lyrically Ready to Die is nothing special.

The negative attitudes towards women is a huge problem for the 'rap' music genre. Many of us think it goes all the way back to one of the very first 'rap' records, released by Scottish rapper MC Kenneth McKellar. This shameful track candidly discusses the practice of wife-beating.
