CONFUSED? You should be.

The marketing is very clever. Food labels often show us pictures of happy animals in wholesome country scenes and make bold claims such as ‘natural’, ‘locally produced’ or ‘traditional’. But what these labels don’t tell you is the misery the animals will have endured if they have been raised on a factory farm.

In Europe, an intensively reared baby pig will be separated from his mother at just three or four weeks old and confined in a bare pen with many other distressed piglets. Chances are he’ll be severely scratched and bitten. Or the piglets will gnaw each other’s tails, bored and frustrated in their overcrowded, barren environment.

In an attempt to prevent these injuries, it’s routine for the factory farmer to take a hot blade or pliers and slice off each piglet’s tender tail. His tiny teeth may also be clipped or ground down almost to the gum. And he may be castrated. These mutilations are likely to be done without anaesthetic, causing him terrible pain.

These are the grim realities of factory farming that food labels tell us nothing about.

Good man Tel. That's 2 of us on here. The rest presumably couldn't care that their indulgence is putting animals through hell. Correction. Slippy buys his meat from a local farmer I believe. So that's 3. Absolutely no excuse for most of the rest.

Yes I am very partial to a bacon sarnie Kenny mann as you know and I know where the meat comes from and it is from a very well reared stock, my mate sells it to the local community. Yes it is a lot dearer than the supermarket rubbish but it is far superior in every way, morally and taste wise. Hope all is good with you by the way.

I only eat British pork that has been out-door bred and sleeps on straw beds.....usually Waitrose.

Also they must put to bed under a nice cashmere duvet.

Very few people even think about what life the pig has had, other more important things on their mind probably.

Was a woman on with Andrew Neil earlier today who said she couldn't care less how animals are treated.
All she was worried about was the price and said even thinking about it she couldn't care less what suffering they go through.
Looked as if she'd just ate a whole buffalo. Fat cow.
Good sentiments Kenny but very few share them.

Tell me, what's more important in your opinion. Interest rates, the price of tea?
By:

loads of things in life are more important. I wouldn't include the price of tea though, as I don't give that any thought at all.if I had any say in how the pigs are looked after then obviously I'd like them to be well cared for until their ultimate death. But like I said, most people never give it any thought at all.

I'm pretty sure and hopeful that she is one of a minority, aka. Most people will be totally ignorant of what the majority of animals have to go through to end on plates, and they're not going to be made aware though the normal channels, sadly.

I think we should have a peaceful protest in Tommy's pub tonight.
So what say we gatecrash his drinking den on the stroke of midnight.
Will raise awareness not to mention Tommy's blood pressure. Laugh

Waste of time, Tommy couldn't give a **** about animal welfare, which is odd because he's a good man in other ways. He has a cat, for instance, which although not his own originally, he cares for.

Anyway it's an early one for me. Wink
