It's like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some of my local pubs where I'm from were very rough with a guaranteed fight inside the pub, outside the pub and spilling over into the chippy. My mate went to boot somebody wearing a pair of slip ons one time and missed and his shoe came off and flew over the chippy counter into the fryer. The thing is it's normal for the people there and they wouldn't think anything of it. People from out of the area were frightened to come into the area because of it though. But that's the story all over the country. Other places always seem rougher.

Salford does have some nicer parts but there's a lot of hell going on there. I remember when we used to play Broughton Rugby Club. Most places you'd get an occasional brawl break out. It was pretty much guaranteed playing them. To be fair that would hve been the case with quite a few of the inner city teams.

I remember when I was a kid we were playing down Collyhurst way at football and their keeper pulled out a huge Bowie type knife and chased my mate all over the place with it. I don't think he wanted to cut his hair.

There used to be one in York (I know, I know, but it's not all Roman Ruins and Ye Olde Skinny Latte, it has it's mean streets) called The Imperial, on a Friday and Saturday night there would be an ambulance parked outside from 6pm, to save time driving there! I'm spending a weekend in South Wales in a couple of weeks time, there's a rugby game I'm watching. I went on trip adviser to see if there was any decent boozers nearby, nearly every review ended with 'and then I got punched in the face'. So if you never hear from me again........

Thought the punchline might be '.....and the chippy covered it in batter and sold it as North Sea Cod n' chips'

The famous Hen and Chickens is frequented by drug dealers, yardies, gypsies, thieves, prostitutes, locals, shoplifters and idiots. It really cant go more than 5 minutes without a fight. But we love it and its no more than £2.50 a pint

I know loads and loads of really sh1t pubs. I find them slightly endearing - and of course you feel like a big fish in a small pond. But not many proper rough ones.

That pub in Aberdeen seems more grimy and run down than a place where Angels fear to tread aka and the publican seemed a bit of a bully picking on the little fella with glasses.

A couple of lads I work with who also work offshore have had a few drinks down at the docks in Aberdeen and they're not fighting men and have never had any trouble that I'm aware of.

If you thought The Gaiety was rough morpeth then you haven't seen The Hayfield about half a mile away in Chapeltown, a well known story of the cops chasing some villains who ran into The Hayfield and the chase aborted pronto. Both The Gaiety and The Hayfield were pulled down years ago much to the cops delight. The Duncan is still going strong as is The General Elliott but The Scotsman has gone and The Middleton Arms thankfully is now an Aldi Supermarket.
