My mother is 86 years old and has lived in The West Midlands all her life. I was talking to her yesterday (she still has all her marbles) and she was saying how people used to love Great Britain and were proud of their history.

She said that this doesn't seem the case nowadays. Obviously, at her age, she doesn't get out and about an awful lot so she is shielded quite a lot from what is actually going on in this country.

It made me wonder if British people feel the same way about their country today as say, people did in The 1950s.
I don't know if it has ever been possible to gauge this..... but my guess is that the old girl is probably right.
Are British people still proud of their country?

Your mum is right. They only love money and themselves nowadays. Social fabric of this country has been destroyed. Thatcher to blame.

In an odd kinda way, I'm glad my folks have passed away and are not witnessing this PISH we're currently going through.

I will ALWAYS be a soldier for MY country.

Well she can vividly remember the second world war and often talks about it.... especially the rationing. She is happy enough in her time of life, as I said she is shielded from a lot of what goes on and would be shocked at the reality of todays UK.
She said the community spirit has disappeared and it's a shame.

Hardly surprising when you teach your children Britain has a dreadful history,is responsible for slavery and famine.

Couple that with the promotion of inferior cultures and the denigration of your own.

Then you import thousands of people who hate you and want to introduce Sharia Law.

Finally the few left who love their country are heaped with slime, called racists and Xenophobes.

Its actually amazing there are any left.

Disagree Mighty mac.

I believe left wing feminist movement was allowed to vilify men and make them ashamed to be men.

Left wing socialism that went out of its way to encourage mass immigration .

They then successfully made people that opposed that action appear to be racist .

They also succeeded in making , anyone who was white ,indigenous and proud of their heritage, to feel that they were racist and ashamed for being those things.

If we could just get away from the politics and politicians - a venal bunch, in it for themselves and their paymasters be it the Unions, Big Business or the Media Barons - and focus on 'the people' then, yeah I love my country.

Above all I love our sense of humour. To be British is to be born with a PhD in wind-ups and double-first in p1ss-takes.

That's what the right on brigade, the professionally offended and those with vested interest in the status quo will never understand and why they want to censor and condemn at every opportunity.

Too many look for reason to spout bile about the UK rather than looking for the good to praise it.
Out of all the countries available to them why do migrants want to come here if it's so bad.
What we need to regain the ground we've lost and make us proud again is a government that will take control of our borders.
UKIP springs to mind.

The people of Britain? No. More and more angry, selfish, rude, intolerant, aggressive people wherever you go. Kids and adults with no manners and no sense of community.

Physical Britain? Yes, with a passion. When I go on holiday to places like Cornwall, Devon, Northumberland, North Yorkshire coast, Norfolk, the Lake District, it just confirms what a stunning country we live in.

My Grandmothers 90, (born same day as Queen) , she is a bit of a Catherine Tate Nan, just like her sister was, old school, brought up in the old days, outside toilets, sharing tin baths, went to work at 14, preggers at 16 and husband (my grandfather) was off to France fighting Merkels ancestors, loves her gin but gave up the ciggies when grandfather died from them. Not PC at all and despises the way every one nowadays moans about everything, always wanting something for free, always refers back to the war when they had fack all and you might get killed any night, but they soldiered on.

Remembers running home through the town from the cinema when the air raid sirens went off, husband was one of 10 brothers and 2 sisters, a lot of them died in the war - only one left now 'Uncle Ronald', he was a rear gunner in a Lancaster and defied all the odds by surviving, he said it was a short straw getting the rear gun position, never asked him why as I imagined it would be pretty **** anywhere onboard.

Her Father was a bare knuckle boxer, 80 full strength capstans a day and 1/2 bottle whiskey, tough man, remember him but I was onyl young, loved all his grandchildre.

Grandmother lived through the war, up on the building roof putting out incendiery bombs, used to take grandfathers dinner to him in the pub when war was over. Tough as nails, still takes care of herself at 90, takes out bins, on bus to shops, etc,etc - likes to do it herself, she is proud - would proably stick one on Cameron if she met him.

A real role model and something for the likes of Posh boy George and Cameron to look up to, a pair of right nobs who have no idea what work or freedom is having never worked a day in their lives or fought for freedom and put their lives on the line - we may as well have a couple of lessers doing their jobs, probably harder.

My Grandfather was in France - in a firefight a good mate was shot and dying, stayed with him till he died, whilst he waited his unit further down the road got shelled and wiped out, only he survived - strange world, then the ciggies got him but loved a pint and a bet.

He captured two germans, apparently they were really tall (he was short), remember Grandmother telling the story when he walked these two Germans into camp, they were 6footers and could have probably overpowered him at anytime but they'd had enough of it. He was really annoyed cos they gave him their watches but they got lost in all the other aggro.

Whilst he was in amongst it he did tell us he did once freeze from all the bombing, he never really talked to much about the war and never answered when asked if he killed anyone (people would ask, they just could not grasp how insensitive a question it was), I think it brought back two many bad memories but I know what he'd think of tosspot Cameron and Osbourne.

People didn't want much in those days, the seemed to enjoy life, probably because they had real statesman leading them and not career politicians, leaders who were tough people themselves and not nancy boys.

It's sad that all my grandfathers mates gave their lives for freedom and these twats are giving it away.

Perhaps we do need a nother fackin war to knock some sense into these twats supposedly running the show.

Rant over.

I couldnt give a damn about the country, its nothing more than jingoistic parochialism, and its artificial. (sure for sport then Ill back England, but sport is in place of war)
How can anyone care when the constitution comes to mean very little to the individual?
Politics is just a homogenised manufactured process of subterfuge where manipulation and corruption exist but in a more contrived manner than the blatant banana republics, but it all amounts to the same result. Dark practices rule and you are told you had a say in it when you didnt.
Its not the left wing folk or the youth to blame, its the continued bread dipping throughout history that has created a monster where assets and capital are divided up between cliques, ideologies are plotted up in back rooms spin doctors actually lie in art form.
Its like drawing a smily face in a dog turd with a stick.

I saw a good interview the other day with the man who designed the 'V for Vendetta' Guy Fawkes mask.
He said 'It never mattered which party you voted for because you always got the government....now it doesnt matter which government you get because its all enterprise'

Ah yes - the mouthy g0bsh1tes (from any area on the social spectrum). Incomprehensible loud folks whose only modes of existence are, seemingly, drunkenness and violence.

But these really are the minority - it's just they are very, very loud.

Thankfully there is still a majority whose values put duty, kindness and quiet determination before ambition, appearance and extroverted emotive boasting.

Agree about the physical geography of our country. There may be more beautiful mountains, beaches, valleys, waterfalls etc in the world, but not all of the above within a 10 hour (tops) drive.

There is another dimension to it also.
Perhaps for the first time in the history of this country there has been a generation where the war battlefield hasn't been right on our doorstep, all the propaganda that goes with vilifying a common enemy hasn't been one about invasion or wide scale loss of lives. Instead of having to rally around, people have been free to observe ourselves more and the battle has become one of social and economic strife during relative peace.

Under no circumstances should any British person love their country, not now, if possible do not talk to anyone.
Report U.A. • February 9, 2016 10:12 AM GMT
Unfortunately the British love to complain. Just like the Inuits have 17 odd words for “snow” we must have about 51 for “moan”. That’s why the Brits love their soaps. After a hard day whining there’s nothing better than coming home and watching random people whinging and arguing on the telly. Yes we just can’t get enough of it. Of course with all the whining comes nostalgia. Nothing can ever be as good as it used to be. Who thinks that any of the following is true?

Music – “there’s no real bands making good music anymore”
Football – “these days it’s all about the money, there’s no loyalty or passion, not like in my day”
Telly – “there’s no decent british sitcoms these days”

It’s got nothing to do with politics as everyone hates their political leaders, well apart from North Korea, but still love their country. It’s just british people aren’t happy unless they are having a bit of a moan which in turn makes them a little bit miserable. Whereas people who live overseas love their country and aren’t that bothered by other countries, British people don’t really like their country but they hate all other countries. So they are patriotic but just at a much lower level.

So where does it all come from. Overpopulation, small houses and a rubbish climate have to be big causes. If you just look at England there is only one country that has a higher population density that is also bigger than England (Bangladesh). Not only is it massively overpopulated but it's not that nice to go out for almost half the year as it’s cold, wet and dark and the house you live in is a bit small.

Pretty sound insights there U.A! Grin

Doesn't help of course if you spend all day in here or restrict your sample size to the Chit-Chat massive.

There are decent bands however - you just have to look much harder and take lots of antiretroviral drugs to stop X-Factor contamination.

It probably doesn't help that the monarch still holds the majority of real estate and the people of the nation struggle to get a mortgage of their own....while still funding the queen through the civil list.
All the archaic traditions that run through the fabric of life in England is about inequality, whether that's about those with money gaining from those that don't or those impecunious who are expected to die to save the nation sent forth by the finger pointing aristocracy who then divide the spoils of war between themselves.
