If there is any anthem less suitable than God Save the Queen, it is surely Jerusalem which is quite hard to sing, and whose most stirring words (chariot of fire etc) come in the third verse. Hard to imagine it being belted out from the terraces (even if we still had terraces).
Still, it's got some rentaquote backbencher into the local paper and the chit chat forum, which was probably the main idea. |

Land Of Hope and Glory, for me.

GSTQ is the BRITISH national anthem. That's why we Scots often boo it when Scotland play England in rugby, fitba, etc.
|

By:
A song without a mention of 'God' would do for me.
|
|
By:
Land of Hope & Glory is about Britain so effectively no different to GSTQ, whereas Jerusalem is about England.
The daily rendition of Jerusalem by the England cricket fans always seems to raise a bit of emotion in the crowd. |
|
By:
I prefer Land of Hope & Glory, it always worked well in the Commonwealth Games until someone decided to change it.

As an anthem should be uplifting, if we really want to create emotion and euphoria, why shouldn't we adopt something along the lines of the New Zealand's Haka. Song AND Dance.
But something innately British. I give you, 'Oops, Up Side Your Head'. |

Not something the government should get involved in.
I don't want government deciding what the English national dish is, or the national dress, or what people sing or listen to at sporting events. The free market has got this covered, and if the Commonwealth Games Committee wants to choose a different anthem for their medallists than the Rugby Football Union or the Chipping Norton street party, then let them do so. MPs should butt out, and concentrate on other shine. |

Hi Bongo.
Do you think Sanders will win Iowa? |
|
By:
Hi Evgeny, I'm flattered that you ask me.
It's fascinating in a way to wonder how many US voters are being taken in by his brand of statism - Sanders wants a $15 minimum wage, universal health care paid for by government, and all university tuition covered. Vote for me, and you'll get free stuff is the simplistic message. As to whether he'll win, I haven't a clue. |

Toby Perkins is my MP. He backed the pseudo-Tory Liz Kendall in the Labour leadership election, so he's a c*nt. What's wrong with God Save the Queen anyway?

I also like the idea to follow in New Zealands footsteps and combine music with dance. What could be more English than the Okey Cokey. Granted some of the footballers would have to learn which foot was right and left but it would get my vote. Surely it couldn't offend anybody.
|

By:
Related to this - you would think Northern Ireland would change their anthem. If England did so - as they should, they are playing as England not Britain - you would think NI would come under pressure to do so. The Irish Rugby team changed theirs - which I thought was quite decent of them to do so. Since its a dual citizenship "state" its weird to have the anthem only reflect one of the nationalities?

I thought the Rugby team kept the old anthem but also play Irelands Call. I'm sure I heard both last time I watched the rugby. Would be a good idea if for the sport both adopted Irelands call which must surely appeal to everyone. |

Pretty stupid to name your national anthem after a town on the other side of the world.
Why not "New York New York"? |
|
By:
i detest Jerusalem. Blake's poem is just about acceptable (despite the answer to the question being a resounding no, he did not), but Parry's score sucks balls.
we should also remember that its invention came about as a clarion call for men to go and sacrifice themselves on the western front during world war 1. It has a blind, public school, tub-thumping patriotic stupidity to it which makes my skin crawl. It's even worse than ruddy faced white middle class men singing negro spirituals at the rugby. |

if we are going to change it, might i suggest reworking the words of god save the queen to the tunes of either the russian or sri lankan national anthems who are the runaway winners.
failing that we could all just whistle the theme from the great escape. |

Considering the state of our roads, "I Like Trucking" might be appropriate.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZbQ3lTObas Not keen on "Jerusalem". If we must have a hymn then "I Vow to Thee My Country" is sung to a wonderful piece of music by Gustav Holst. |
|
By:
I find it very stirring to sing 'land of hope and glory', 'I vow to thee my country' and 'Jerusalem', but the words are either religious or monarchist or both. Don't get me wrong I think the queen does a very good job - but I would never kneel to her. And i think religion is a pile of poo.
We need an anthem just about england, nothing else. |

Back Home
Back home, they'll be thinking about us When we are far away Back home, they'll be really behind us In every game we play We will still hear them roaring And we'll give all we've got to give For the folks back home Back home, they'll be watching and waiting And cheering every move Back home, though they think we're the greatest That's what we've got to prove Once more we will meet with the best Like before we'll be put to the test Oh we will give all we've got to give For the folks back home They'll see as they're watching and praying That we put our hearts in our playing We'll fight until the whistle goes For the folks back home Rousing Tune If Ever!!! |
