Had a car accident in Ireland a couple of weeks ago and never recovered
Serious head injury

Had a few late 80s hits with 'Wonderful Life' and 'Everything's Coming Up Roses'

However I heard some recent live stuff and his voice seemed even better
Here's 'Sweetest Smile' live in Liverpool a couple of years ago

That's horrible news. Had no idea at all.

Have several of his albums, and this might well be a track to take to a desert island.

"Paradise" (from 1987 'Wonderful Life' album)

Sad news.  Bought the Wonderful Life album on vinyl in '87.

Always thought 'Sweetest Smile' was a far better song than 'Wonderful Life'

'I just wish I was made of wood,
I might not feel pain,
even if I should, even if I should'

Great stuff

Wonderful Life video makes my all-time top 3.  So evocative - I was born in Fleetwood - another concrete-laden, grey skies, muddy beach, stuck-in-the-fifties seaside resort ... but life goes on.  Well, not in his case, but the song is a more permanent monument than most of us will get.  Respect.

bodil,

The song/video are special ( and evocative) to me also. I don't know how old you are, but my memories go way back.

Throughout the Fifties and up until 1963 all the long summer  holidays were spent with my Mum at her Aunt's house in Preesall. So great memories of Knott End, Fishing off of the ferry slip, watching the trawlers, the dredgers and the Isle Of Man boats sailing in and out of the busy docks. Trips on the Ferry across to,Fleetwood were always a treat. To play in the Penny Arcades on the Pier , the lido in the Pleasure Gardens and Pitch and Putt. The tram rides on the double deckers and the endless walks amongst the sand dunes and balancing on the wooden ' windbreaks ' buried in the wet sand.
Happy happy days.
My sister and I go back there every couple of years or so. A kind of pilgrimage. Our great Aunt, the uncles, the cousins , our parents are long gone. As are the Trawlers, the demise of the fishing industry ripped the heart out of Fleetwood. And now it's  sad to see the changes that have occurred.
We stay at The Euston - we love it's faded Victorian charm, another symbol of what was a splendid building in its heyday.
On our last visit, the newly built tram lines and impressively modern trams were running. So maybe some new investment may give the town a boost.
But it's the old memories I still look back to. It will never be the same. But I still love it, for what it means to me - the happiest days of my childhood..

Do you still live there bodil - or go back ?

I haven't been back for so long.  Went there with an ITU nurse in the mid-seventies - we tried to ensure my gran avoided the rumpy-pumpy.  Tina a major Blackpool disco queen.  Sadly in the company of Ike.

Both granddads were Fleetwood trawlermen - one died early - the other ended up working in the gutting/filleting sheds after getting too old for the boats.  My god - the fish he "smuggled" out were so tender/fresh.  Could see the Isle Of Man ferry from my bedroom window.

Happy young days indeed.  The penny arcades, the trips to the sophisticated kingdom of Blackpool.  Searching the market stalls for crumbling editions of New Worlds.

Different world indeed.

Had Wonderful Life album.  Played it to death.  Didn't have much idea about the artist.

After just listening to Paradise, I feel a bit sad.

I have four of his albums. Very good singer. He moved to Ireland 10 years ago and was due to become a grandfather for the first time on St Patrick's Day. Very sad news. RIP

Just listening to Black's Everything's Coming Up Roses, on YouTube, which I always liked,  the sound quality wasn't very good - and thought it could sound 'rockier'.

Sure enough found this cover version.

I love that the bass has been brought to the front, and the sound quality is great.
