My back was chronic a few years ago - persistent pain for years... like broken glass at bottom of spine. Tried anti inflammatories and pain killers - ended up bleeding through over use.
now my back is a lot better. I walk for 45 minutes every other day. It hurts for a few minutes but it gets gradually better over time. The day after the walk you feel better. Been walking for three years.
Foods that help - if Tiger Woods is reading this - eat f@@king seeds - seeds have the best oils for your spine - couple of bags a week. pumpkin and sunflower seeds. they also have minerals you need too.
For bones - as you age your body does not absorb calcium as the stomach loses its acidity. Your stomach produces acid to digest meat so wait fifteen minutes after eating meat and drink milk or kiefer? If you are a strict vegetarian you are doomed.
Do not buy calcium carbonate tablets - they cannot be absorbed(can also double chances of heart attack, calcium plaques) - try calcium citrate? or just eat foods with calcium. boney fish, milk cheese and kiefer.

Its a bit of a regime but better than rolling about in agony. I also got a lot of flack from my doctor who thought i was faking it? normal wear and tear was his usual response to my pain.

the power of natural foods is unbelievable - as i explained above i  have been walking for three years, but in the last six months I have gone wild and eat only veg, fish, nuts, cheese and milk. My muscles have been firming up and fat is dropping away. Its slow but steady recuperation.
Building blocks and nutrients. Avoid the stuff in packets.

fix your back.
