Astronomers reckon there is a new planet beyond Pluto, ten times bigger than Earth. Probably.

Is there any organization that has less credibility than lying NASA?  I would trust the North Koreans over NASA.

Yeah, good job they've found one 'cos didn't they say one of the planets that we had to learn at school - your anus I think it was - was'nt a planet. We still need a full 7 or I'd feel my education was wasted.

Mind you, next thing scientists will discover is that 7 x 8 DOESN'T = 56 ... then we'll be really fooked.

Everything probably. They need a new excuse to get some more  dollars.
Here's NASA's Jim Green to sell it to you.

Pluto was down-graded to Dwarf-Planet status.....we are keeping Uranus

Now there are 9 again if proved.

So you think NASA "probably" bribed Caltech to come up with this. OK, thanks.

No they didn't, the International Astronomical Union did.

Can't people understand that not everything to do with space is to do with NASA ?

Caltech manages research expenditures of $270 million annually and NASA is a  one of the largest federal agencies contributing to their research.

I'm sure there were only 7 when I was at school, not counting Earth.

In fact just googled it and there are only 7 + earth. Where do you get 9 from if Pluto has been cancelled

Recent documentaries would have you believe they know almost everything about the universe. Now they find a planet - earth x10 - in our solar system.

New planets, new dinosaurs (the Welsh dragon) and they've filled in the periodic table. This should inspire the young to take up science.

Even girls.

I'd take this claim with a big grain of salt.

The announcement was made by Mike Brown's team who have found many Kuiper Objects in the outer Solar System.

Why would he say that it's likely there is another planet and let someone else claim the glory?

I think this is an overblown story on a hypothetical planet, maybe to gain more funding for his team.

And has anyone calculated yet how long it is going to take get there and how  - its all rather pointless even mentioning it if we can't get there and have alook around - everyhting they tell us has to be taken on trust and I am not always comfortable with that - but I suppose it keeps the guys at NASA in work.

Didn't you see the graphics shown on BBC, the orbits of those bodies must have been distorted by a massive object in line with what they are suggesting.

Yes but I find it strange that Mike Brown's team are announcing this. Why didn't they find the planet themselves and claim all the glory. Mike Brown's discoveries helped demote Pluto and he's not a theorist but a planet hunter. I find it strange indeed.

Make My Hay, it's important we learn more about this area of the Solar System as it's rocks from this area that crashes into our planet when they are disturbed by other factors. Pure science usually doesn't have direct returns but you could say that about electricity.
