Is it possible to improve the sound from a TV (Samsung 5000) by using some kind of deflector behind the TV, instead having to buy an amplifier and speakers.. At present there is a plain wall (concrete base) behind the TV. I was thinking that a piece of strong plastic, perhaps slightly concave, might do the job.  The present overall sound is acceptable, but speech is not so good.  Thanks to anyone who can help!Happy

What I find annoying about the sound on my TV is that the background noise seems to be louder than the dialogue. I can have the volume on my usual number yet I find myself turning the volume up and down throughout a film.

plug it into your Hi-Fi, assuming you have one...cables should be less than a tenner

I think my missus mentioned a soundbar. She found some online but they were all in excess of £100, I wasn't that bothered about the sound then!

Sound travels better through water. Try putting the TV in the fish tank.

Yamaha YAS 101 soundbar for about £110 is a good buy. Sound quality very good for the money and it's got a clear speech button which is a godsend when watching films particularly American ones.
The trouble with sound systems is that you quickly get used to the better sound, it becomes normalised and you forget how aweful it used to be when just played back through the TV.

Changed my mind. Changing the water in a 40in tank would be too much for me. A soundbar would be cheaper too, and i can drink while i watch!!

Is your tv one of the later ones, with a massive 625 lines?

Funnily enough I just went to Barnado's with a load of stuff, including a pair of brand new speakers from my last PC.

The woman said "we can't take these, we can't take anything electrical"!

Not sure if she was convinced, when I tried to explain that it was only a signal going through the wires!

Wish I hadn't left them now!

Knock through concrete wall and sit in other room, trouble is the picture quality may deteriorate.

No point in paying good money for a TV (particularly if you watch movies) and not having a cinema sound system!

Have you read the manual?

As with everything else you can get all the advice you want, on line.

Just have a trawl around but look at this first.....

I think they say all flat tellys sound rubbish coz there's no room inside for speakers to work properly.

Before I got a surround system I used a small pair of USB powered speakers so they worked off the USB on the telly for power, the mains powered ones I had in the past buzzed a bit.

No better suggestion than a sound bar. My old mans proper mutton and he is fine with his £60 LG jobbie.

sound bar is an easy option but not so sure its the best ,cheapest is put the TV through the hi/fi ,Samsung tv dont  have any RCA  audio outs but just use the scart out /rca adapter and your good to go ,you can set it up to use both tv speakers and hi/fi or flick between them .
Also you could consider blue tooth  headphones ,these would give best quality sound imo but they are not for everyone ,if being corned beef is the prob they should be considered .
As mentioned all flat screens dont have the depth and also the speakers are not facing you ,although not sure about samsung being "not very good" deffo right for the money and plenty dearer stuff much less reliable and poorer picture .
Was listening to a selection of soundbars recently and tbh was not impressed ,sounded tinny and not correct .
Depends really on what quality of sound you are used to ,and perhaps what music your into .
Have a samsung through a hifi system and its ok ,good for movies with a great range ,better than the soundbars i listened to but nothing compared to my headphones ,Soundbar could also be hooked up to a phone i think and used to play music from that  and does not take much space up and fits neatly and wont take much setting up so maybe the easiest but perhaps not the best if you have a good ear for sound .

Should add that the telly sounds way better but still average through the surround system compared to when I run the Xbox through it which I use for Youtube and telly catchup etc - sounds awesome then Cool

Re Samsung TV's, the independent What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision magazine awarded "Best Awards" in 7 separate TV categories (differing screen sizes and prices) - Five of the seven awards were won by Samsung TV's with the other two being won by Panasonic (best 40-46" under £500) and LG (best 52-60" over £3000)
