most Americans think a terrorist attack is the biggest threat to their security

Maybe they have got their priorities wrong

Mental country, only interested in companies making big money.

I know the gun stats are terrible, but it's really not a black and white issue. Both my father in law and brother in law own guns - probably a dozen between them. They're not your stereotypical gun owners - my fil is an English teacher lol both of them use the guns for hobbies and home protection as is their legal right to.
Report tobermory • January 6, 2016 12:47 AM GMT
i think suicides are the overwhelming majority

More people were shot dead last year in US by toddlers than by terrorists.

Day 6, 2016. 157 gun deaths in US this year; 569 incidents; 347 wounded; 10 under-11 children killed or wounded
Report mobo • January 6, 2016 12:46 PM GMT
the mover  I am not a pro gun chappie  but have much experience (ex) of weapons

some of the guys I know like competition shooting some have one or two favourites and others more

Its like having lots of cars, so, guns like cars are dangerous weapons in the wrong hands

in this country we have fairly good control but YES the yanks are way out of order methinks

just my opinion

It was on the BBC that more people were shot dead on Christmas Day in the USA that were shot in the UK in the whole of 2015.

More people injured in the UK putting on new socks on Christmas Day than in the US in the whole of 2015.

It's alright the big pond is between me and the fil mac Laugh

themover - I did say a dozen between them. If you like target shooting then it's pretty normal to have a variety of guns to choose from.

why do none of you lot post the figures for gun-deaths of other countries of this continent? try mexico, or honduras, or the socialist paradise of venezuela, or..... just about anywhere in this brutal region. the u.s is an oasis of tranquility by comparison. but the comparison will not be made, because you all fall for the bbc-peddled crazy u.s. bollox and ignore the startling brutality of those nations that cannot stop its own from trying to get there. the bbc line is that the u.s. is mad. but what do they say about the mind-boggling slaughter of innocents every day in other parts of the americas? why not ridicule them and remark upon the fact that everyone in central and south america would leave for the u.s. yesterday?

they will not because it does not their agenda. imagine the newsnight reports if thousands of girls were raped and murdered with impunity by gangs in collusion the police in the u.s. the outrage would be seismic. it happens in latin america all the time. and no-one is outraged.
Report grappler • January 6, 2016 9:06 PM GMT
* with the police. drunk again.
Report Hamsterdam • January 6, 2016 10:58 PM GMT
grappler, you wouldn't call those South American countries advanced nations though. In advanced nations it's a very American specific problem.

There is no valid argument against stricter gun controls in that country.

210,000 -440,000 deaths from medical error in us hospitals annually Shocked
we need a obama to ban doctors and nurses! now!
Report polybot • January 7, 2016 12:22 PM GMT
prescription drugs in the community kill as many as gun homicide (and that's assuming no overlap)
we need a war against medicine!
Report Shrewd_dude • January 7, 2016 6:34 PM GMT
The countries that Grappler refers to have far more in common with America culturaly and demographically than places like Finland and Sweden etc which are often used for pointless comparisons.

The initial stat is also pointless because 142 people killed by guns won't be cases of murders it will also include suicides by guns.

They can shoot burglars with no questions asked.

With a notice on the front door which reads '' we don't prosecute intruders here - we bury them.''

Remember: "Guns don't kill people, soya kills people". (Apparently!).
Report Injera • January 7, 2016 7:56 PM GMT
Shrewd - check my opening post. Agreed there were many suicides (which in itself is awful. Guns make it too easy for mentally troubled individuals to end their lives..).

13000 people died from violent gun crime in the US of A, the bastion of the free world.

No freedom without security...
Report Shrewd_dude • January 7, 2016 10:39 PM GMT
More likely to be killed by a car.
Report crystalhunt • January 7, 2016 11:53 PM GMT
Not so safe in Gunchester these days after a spate of shootings in the past few weeks.
Report themightymac • January 8, 2016 9:50 PM GMT
Guns make it too easy for mentally troubled individuals to end the life of others. All one needs to buy a gun in America is a state driving licence. This is daft. There should be more stringent requirements.
Report mokegibboni • January 9, 2016 1:52 AM GMT
mobo - yes, but cars aren't designed to kill people, guns are!
