I get a flare up every couple of years or so, not severe but it is unbelievably painful and always the big toe. Naproxen gets rid of it very quickly, that is what you need.

Indometacin is the anti-inflammatory of choice for me. Ask your Doc for some.
One 3 times a day as soon as you feel it starting up. Often, it works within a day!

Sid, that is very bad advice, you should not take allopurinol for gout, it makes it worse.

Allopurinol is taken in tablet form once daily, preferably after food. The tablet should be swallowed with water.

Allopurinol is available in 100 mg and 300 mg strength tablets.
Your doctor will advise you about the correct dose.
Usually you’ll start with between 100 mg and 300 mg daily but you may need to increase the dosage if your blood urate level doesn’t come down far enough. Lower doses are used in people with significant kidney or liver disease.
Generally, you shouldn’t start taking allopurinol until an acute attack of gout has completely settled, although sometimes this isn’t possible so the treatment may be started while the attack is in a mild phase.
Usually, allopurinol is started 2–3 weeks after an acute attack has settled.
How long does allopurinol take to work?
Allopurinol lowers the level of urate in the blood within a few weeks.
However, urate crystals in the tissues dissolve away very slowly and so acute attacks may still occur.
Acute attacks of gout will usually stop, often during the first year of treatment with allopurinol.

My mate is the senior partner at one of the biggest group practices in the U.K. and he would never prescribe that drug for gout.

See your doctor, get a blood test and he will advise if you need allopurinol or not.

I've had several bad gout attacks which even left me with a bunion. I've been on allopurinol for a couple of years now and not had any sort of attack.

Allopurinol is not prescribed to treat an attack of gout, it's prescribed to prevent attacks. As I understand it, once you start it, you stay on it forever .

There is all sorts of info about gout treatment (including allopurinol) on this page

I've just been reading about lifestyle changes which you can make to reduce the chances of further attacks. However I'm not overweight, hardly drink, dont smoke, almost vegitarian and cycle about 100 miles each week so not much I can do there.

Gout can be hereditary.  My dad, brother and sister also suffer from it in varying degrees, and there is no similarity when it comes to smoking/drinking etc.

Get proper advice and a blood test if necessary - don't risk a complication like a bunion or kidney stones

For me it seems to be dietary.  No real problems touch wood since I stopped eating pate.  Over xmas I had a little bit of pate (couldn't say no).  Sure enough could feel it coming on in my big toe a few days later. But a combination of cherry juice, cider vinegar and asprin seems to work well to alleviate the worst of it

I've had gout several times over the last 15 years.
The last time was on holiday two years ago in the joint of my hand. The giveaway for gout is the burning you get in the joint.

I noticed it had started again this Christmas night in the joint of my big toe when I went to bed.
It was much worse on Saturday morning when I got up. I couldn't put anything on my foot.
I ate half a 680g jar of cherries and took one Ibuprofen tablet.
Five hours later I repeated the dose.

I put my shoe on around 6 and took another tablet.
Next day no problem, shoes on and walking - no limp.

It's gone completely now.

I've stopped it before using Ibuprofen, but the double header of Cherries and Ibuprofen seems to good to be true if it continues to do the trick.

I know a chap who suffered with gout who was a heavy drinker. He packed up drinking after his doctor told him to.
That was fifteen years ago and he says he hasn't had a twinge of gout since he stopped drinking.

If people can identify a food as causing their gout problems, then surely they only have to stop eating the offending food to remain gout free?

I used to suffer from it all the time. Alopurinol just made me depressed and didn't seem to work, so I stopped taking it and went for a lifestyle change. No more Red Wine, red meat only once or twice a week, only one curry a week, only one kebab a week, prawns only once a week, cut back on coleslaw and tunafish, don't touch Chilli flavoured peanuts with a bargepole, don't drink spirits at all, limit myself to a maximum 5 pints of beer a day, though usually only have 2 or 3, and don't eat too much cheese. When I feel a twinge coming on I take a couple of pills supplied to me by the local gangster who seems to like me. They are strong anti inflamitaries. I asked my Doc to prescribe them to me, but she said if I took too many they would give me a heart attack. She prescribed me some other pills, but they are useless. Clearly the Doctors only prescribe the pills that they make the most dosh from the drug companies and don't have the patients health as a consideration. Anyway, I only get a couple of minor attacks a year now, and that's because I have ignored my above rules (usually the cheese rule). I had my first bottle of Red Wine in 12 years on Christmas Day,no side affects at all.You only live once Happy.

They put my mate on Allopurinol and he had an attack of gout soon after starting them.
The doctor told him that they don't work for everybody.

Surely that's wrong and you have to take them over a period for them to work, and certainly not during an attack?

i had gout on and off for a few years took anti inflammatory tablets from the doctors but the best ones were arcoxia after about 4 hours i could walk but for some reason they were a bit reluctant to prescribe them i think that it was down to cost also they are a lot kinder to your gut

Try researching "iodine deficiency" - in relation to gout .

There are some iodine supplements available at Amazon.

Lugol solution

Seafood is supposed to be a trigger for gout. It's even mentioned on this thread.

Yet while I was on holiday the last time this year,, I ate it every day for a fortnight and - no gout.

Ibuprofen is good too, as is Aspirin, because they are anti-inflammatory, but won't usually do much against Gout.
Make sure to always take them with food though.
