Thomas Ricoletti is somewhat surprised to see his wife dressed in her old wedding gown as only a few hours earlier she took her own life. The apparent ghost of Mrs Ricoletti now appears to be prowling the streets with an unslakeable thirst for revenge. From fog-shrouded Limehouse to the bowels of a ruined church, Holmes and Watson must use all their cunning to combat an enemy seemingly from beyond the grave. One-off special episode set in Victorian London, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, with Tim McInnerny and Catherine McCormack

Flawed in my view. Nearly everybody benefited from the story such that it was but Cumberbatch didn't and was okay but not stellar. There was none of the fizz of say The Scandal Of Belgravia. Each of the characters could slip seamlessly into Victoriana because even in the present day their characters breathe and have almost a stiffness which would have been at home in that era but that is anathema to Cumberbatch's Holmes which is brilliant but very different to Brett and others.

Another bugbear. I've also seen Sufragette and here we once again enter into the rewriting of history. The movement of universal suffrage was at least in its dynamic phase a century long struggle but this was more class and not sex based.

What has happened to the study of historical accuracy?

It's become a thing of the past, to be sure.

And yet it is a measure of how far things have fallen because I'm struggling to think of anything superior over the festive season.
