Given this is the BBC, I can't wait to see what surprises they have in store for us.
We've already seen Little Nell magically transformed from a pale young girl into a vibrant mixed-race character, on the cusp of an innocent childhood romance with a white boy, to demonstrate to us that even way back then London was a Multicultural, Multiracial Paradise. I'd be profoundly disappointed if Bill Sikes doesn't turn out to be a deeply frustrated individual who "identifies" as female and yearns to be a ladies maid in full uniform named Cecily Esmerelda. Sadly, the Fascist British Empire doesn't understand his wish for Gender Reassignment, and so he has turned to crime, but Society Is To Blame Your Honour. Episode 5 looks particularly mouth-watering, the text below copied from one of those TV listings websites : "We see the arrival from India of young Dhani Copperfield, cruelly placed in the care of Mr Murdstone who forces Dhani to live as 'David' on pain of constant beatings. David manages to escape from Murdstone's house, and while walking around London falls hopelessly in love with Oliver Twist. Oliver himself is on the rebound after a torrid experience at the workhouse, being pimped by Mr Bumble. David and Oliver decide to run away to the safe space of Ye Olde Brunel Polyversity and enrol as Diversity Officers, where they start workshops for like-minded sorts. They publish a weekly column in the Pickwick Pink Paper but are thrown in prison after falling foul of the fascist, sexist, homophobic, racist transphobic Clause 128 legislation introduced by Becky Thatcher after she was dumped by Tom Sawyer". This is a TV winner and no mistake. |

So when he said to Mr Bumble he wanted more it wasn't food he was talking about?

You can't beat costume drama, ideally the original Dickens/Austen stories.
However, some of us with long memories will NEVER quite be able to shake off the trauma of having sat through all of 'Tipping The Velvet", which was advertised as being choc-full of top notch girl-on-girl action, only to be let down and deceived so badly. I for one still bear the scars of that horror. |
