Here 'WE' are in the united kingdom. But it's anything but united. We should be investing in free education for only one reason. To win. We are competing against all the other countries out there. By investing in people we might prosper as a people. But we don't. People are scared of increasing their debts on education. Years ago I went to night classes, all those colleges i went to have closed. Swept away. No opportunities exist for free working class education anymore. I heard on the radio the other day about a man who invented the magnetic resonance chamber in the UK. he could not get backing so sold his invention to a USA company for some minor sum. These chambers are now in every hospital across the world - billions lost to the tax payer. Penicillin was invented in the UK too - sold to the usa too. We're selling out at every turn. no faith in our fundamental resources... the people of this nation.

My education policy.

Get rid of faith schools.
Re-install grammar schools.
Tax private schooling to provide funding for state schools.
The cost, to the student, of university education to be linked to the relevance and value of the course to the workplace.
High class technical education/apprenticeships based around trades as an alternative to non academic students.

Some praiseworthy suggestions there Jack, notably 1,2,4,5.

Where on earth do we begin though?  Ending the compulsory left-wing education of children in State schools has to be a primary aim, and only English speakers to be working and taught in English schools.

There are far too many children with meaningless A Level passes going to sub-prime 'Universities' to study pointless subjects that most sensible employers would laugh at. That farce has to go on the bonfire.

Not only keeps the students off the unemployment register for a few years, it also provides jobs for the, ahem, university, ahem, lecturers and all the infrastructure associated with it - uni buildings, halls etc.

Education has become an industry ... it's now big business.

Unfortunately many of its customers are being ripped off by being sold meaningless degrees that offer nothing to the progress of mankind or the prospect of a career.

A couple of years ago I heard a young woman on the BBC news bemoaning that she couldn't get a job.  She said she had worked hard for her degree and had got a 2.1 ... in entertainment management, FFS.

Who sold that degree to her?CrazyCrazyCrazy

Re-introduce Grammar Schools which were a great aid to social mobility.

Now, they are anything but since the few that are left merely act as magnets for wealthy / push parents to move into their catchment areas and hothouse their children to passing the 11-plus.

However, if they were UK-wide.....oh what's the point, it's not going to happen. Much better everyone gets the same (poor) education than we actually try and cater for some smart, motivated kids.
