With the justice system you can have a completely ridiculous defence, but if the prosecution aren't deemed to have provided sufficient evidence to convict, then the defendant will get off.

We don't have all the evidence. Her friend was in the bedroom, did she not scream or call out? If not why not? Was she hoping for some reward or was she afraid for her life? We just don't know. Ridiculous defence story but what evidence was given in private?

That's true tobermory but the newspapers only like to report the bits that they can make into a salacious story, often relying on partial quotations and innuendo.

There will be far more to the story than:
Girl: "I was raped"
Accused: "No, I fell over and me kn0b accidentally slipped up her shufty."

I predict a tsunami of copycat crimes.

I see this is a reference to yet another report given by Mail online. Having now checked that report I see it was said that the press were excluded when that evidence was given.

Only just read this. The contents of the article don't seem to match the headline do they?  Anyway jury seemed to believe whatever evidence was put in front of them.

Ron - you're the one offering the opinions, but just to help you and Ib.S as well, there seems to be significant discrepancies in the reporting of this case.  But, the key bit for me is that it took the jury only 30 minutes to reach their verdict.  I do not have access to all the evidence presented, but they did, and presumably do not. Hth

The way the petition post is worded seems persuasive, except that you don't seem to be given all the facts of the case, nor are given the key fact that a properly constituted jury, presumably in possession of all the "facts" found the defendant not guilty in just 30 minutes.

Re your last point, which frankly makes little sense, but for the avoidance of doubt I am violently opposed to rape.

Yep, on balance and without hearing the evidence, I am happy to rely on the jury's decision, and I do feel strongly against rape.
