Muhammad Ali hit out against Islamic extremists and Donald Trump’s plan to bar Muslims from entering the United States on Wednesday.

“I am a Muslim and there is nothing Islamic about killing innocent people in Paris, San Bernardino, or anywhere else in the world,” the three-time world heavyweight champion said in a statement. “True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion.”

The Louisville-born boxer, who converted to Sunni Islam in 1975, called on Muslims to “stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda”.

He added: “They have alienated many from learning about Islam. True Muslims know or should know that it goes against our religion to try and force Islam on anybody.”

The 132-word statement, issued under the headline ‘Presidential Candidates Proposing to Ban Muslim Immigration to the United States’, also took a thinly veiled swipe at Trump’s sweeping proposal for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”, made on Monday in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting.

“Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is,” Ali said.

Even with advanced Parkinson’s disease having severely limited his speech and mobility, the 73-year-old icon continues to lend his global clout to a number of humanitarian causes.

In March, the Olympic gold medalist called on the Iranian government to release an imprisoned Washington Post journalist, calling the detained Jason Rezaian a “man of peace and great faith” who used his “gift of writing and intimate knowledge of the country to share the stories of the people and culture of Iran to the world”.

In 2011, Ali headed a group of prominent US Muslims in calling on Iranian leaders to release a pair of American hikers who had been detained near the Iran-Iraq border two years prior.

Known simply as The Greatest, he is renowned today as much for his principled stances on religious freedom and racial justice as his epochal victories over Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.

i forgive your weak logic and hysterical irrationality because, well, i'm very forgiving. statistically both would have a very similar probability (basically 100 percent) of having an antecedent raped by slave owner. i'm guessing you believe the ancestors of ali would have greater frequency due to the much greater prevalence of slavery in african culture? to me this seems churlish and petty conjecture befitting a racist like yourself.
you're apartheid views are duly noted however.

not the reverse? do you see black slave-white owner as the natural order? how about the long history islamic white slavery, should this be stripped from history in your view?
or do you see black/black slavery as the natural order? do the millions of current slaves have a case considering they are not owned by michael parkinson or another white man?

1. that's a false dichotomy, false dichotomies only work on fools, which is why it is a standard leftist tool.
2. ali isn't running for president, trump doesn't (in the literal sense) attempt to beat people unconscious.
3. both use hyperbole to push their agendas, one for the islamic agenda, one for the us agenda.
4. i don't "root" for anyone

I know what it says in the record books, and I've seen way worse decisions than that one, but I've seen that fight about eight times. I respect your knowledge of boxing, indeed I accept it's greater than my own, but I question your judgement if you're still giving that one to Leonard.

I hear what you're saying about muscle on the chin, even if you're using it metaphorically. I'm hoping your boy Joshua doesn't have any on his. Wink
Report Eeternaloptimist • December 10, 2015 6:11 PM GMT
Leonard like Ali was a master of nudging the judges his way. Stealing a point here and there and closing out the round to present an image of dominance which may not always have been there. To me the Hagler fight was what it was. A very close fight difficult to score with Leonard doing far better than anybody expected and this may have influenced the judges. Unless I see an out and out robbery I tend not to be too critical of judges as everybody has their own view.

Your comment about Tyson is an interesting one. He had a massive impact on boxing and the division itself in between two great eras of the 70's and 90's. His problems are legion for me though. He burgled an empty house in terms of the fighters he faced in a division where some of the better prospects lost their way in crack dens. It sounds harsh but with the exception of an aged and previously retired Holmes he didn't beat anybody of historical import. For me it's such a shame that Tucker broke his right hand early in their fight because he had similar tools at that time to do the job which Douglas achieved.
Report Eeternaloptimist • December 10, 2015 6:22 PM GMT
On Joshua I don't know if you've seen a copy of his amateur fight with White but that's illustrative for me. Joshua was a skinny boy new to the game and White a fully grown man. White put him down but the crucial thing is the kid got up and came back at White. Ali took the occasional trip to the floor but it was what happened then which was relevant. I may be creating myself as a hostage to fortune but I think he'll do okay on that score. Obviously any guy getting hit in the right place by a 17 stones man can take a nap. Hell it even happened to Randy Tex Cobb. I'll reserve judgement on his stamina for now though. But if you said I had to give a prediction it would be very positive. The way he sits down on his punches as he plants reminds me very much of Joe Louis. It isn't any surprise to me that he is blowing guys away. I can't wait for this weekend.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • December 10, 2015 6:27 PM GMT
I'm not, nor have I ever been, a Tyson fan. Best night of boxing ever for me was when Holyfield kicked his ass in the first fight. He was a phenomenon though, not seen since Big George, even if he was fortunate to arrive when he did. He was a lot more charismatic, if that's the right choice of word for a convicted rapist, than pre-conversion Foreman was too. Tyson definitely caught the public imagination like few boxers have since.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • December 10, 2015 6:31 PM GMT
I've not seen the fight, although I was looking for it. Was Joshua's 3rd fight, Whyte's first! Point taken about physical development though, I'll concede I'd not really taken that into account. Still, 10/1 is a cheap enough price to find out I'm an arse.
Report Eeternaloptimist • December 10, 2015 6:36 PM GMT
Having seen them both I'd say 10/1 is a wise investment. I was most surprised given Whyte's relatively low profile that Joshua was willing to take this fight at this stage. Of course I clearly lean to Joshua and my gut instinct is that it won't go beyond a few rounds but I may even have a bit of 10/1 myself if it's still around.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • December 10, 2015 6:47 PM GMT
You can get 11 on here for Whyte to win by stoppage. As you say, it's not going beyond a few rounds.

There's also an interview with them both via Johnny Nelson. They don't seem to like each other. Two things I'd say about Whyte is that he isn't difficult to hit but thus far he's taken the shots. At this level it's an exciting match up and if Joshua does a number on him then I grow more confident in my predictions about him.

Whyte clearly doesn't like him if he's lending Joshua his kecks to go clubbing in. Poor AJ. He'd look a right plonker strutting round town like Freddie Mercury with those short trousers on. He'd need a tighter belt as well. Good job he didn't borrow a shirt off him as well as Whyte's got bigger t1tties than Pamela Anderson.
