Actually, according historians the Moorish muslim rulers of the southern half of Spain and Portugal were quite benevolent, allowing freedom of religion for Jews and Christians. They also left some interesting technology and wonderful buildings.

Alias is correct.  El Cid was a disaster.  The tolerant Moorish regime was replaced by a bunch of extreme Catholics who make ISIL look like a bunch of Lib-Dems.  The Inquisition, expulsion of the Moros and Jews and the slaughter of the inhabitants of Central and South America.  And if you live in Spain today - watch out - the Civil War showed it's all still just beneath the skin.

The tolerant Moorish regime

I wonder what turned them into the murdering animals that we see shooting and blowing everybody up around the world now?

And you can go to the Alhambra Palace in Grenada and look for the 17 natural symmetries (in the tiling) that the Moorish mathematicians worked out.  Great scientists until the religious extremists did for them too.

Well, the Catholics from about the 12th to the 18th century make ISIL seem like a bunch of amateur zealots.

And children would probably add the Catholic hierarchy have been fairly active in a negative sense since the 18thC.

Well let's give three cheers for ISIL.

Perhaps all the killings, beheadings and torture attributed to them can be forgiven after considering that.

Bodil, I am disappointed at your response.  Not up to your usual standards [:silly:

Again I must state that I am not a man hater, but just pointing out that men basically do not have the empathy of women and also some like killing, torture etc and war and religion gives them the opportunity to indulge.  Witness films like Saw and games like Call of Duty, you don't see many women buying or watching or playing these type of things.

Well that is all true Annie...but you see that is men's instinct, men have evolved like this, if they were not like this
none of us would  be here..you do not realise how hard it was for us in the past to survive.....our comfortable world
of science is very recent

Women are softer than men, and me do need this softness. But their world is also quite cruel in some ways, more in a mental way.
Still as you a women you obviously prefer that way

I like a good horror film myself...more the old Hammer Horror, two crackers on the Horror Chanel last night
and I like a good Zombie film with plenty of goreBlush

I also know underneath we are just as violent as the Muslims...we delude ourselves if we are not,

Although ISIS sometimes go a bit too far for me.

There have been so many bad things done in the Middle East, and it is not all the fault of the Muslims or Arabs  as I prefer
to call them. There is also a responsibility on the West as well, particularly the US

We don't need a one size fits all World, we should keep our differences, and respect one another's values.

I agree with you ebulgery that it it not men's fault that they are so violent, they cannot help the way that they are made.  But unfortunately it is probably why there has been such horrors since civilisation began.

What is this mental cruelty that you accuse women of? I do not think that I have ever abused anyone mentally, or physically come to that.

All very true Alias but you miss out a crucial piece of the puzzle. Muslims are benevolent rulers. If we succumb to Islam maybe they will treat us kindly. Maybe if that's the way the wind is blowing we should throw ourselves on the mercy of moderate Islam. I'm not sure we would want to live under ISIS.
