we cannot fire anything without the permission of the good old USA. So imagine hanging on the line as missiles are racing towards us? can we fire them bwana? not yet the president will let you know.

After we proved ourselves nuclear capable over sixty years ago. instead of finishing the job and making our own missiles - the USA offered us Polaris on certain conditions with the franchise. France got the same deal. So britain doesn't have nuclear missiles the uSA does. We just pilot the boats.

there are land based firing solutions. briefcase bombs. cannon firing solutions. dropping from planes. why spent 170 billion on this again?

Because submarines can hide and move around, which land-based missile silos cannot, and because our country is so small that any silos (aka targets for Russian nukes) would necessarily be close to towns or cities.

I've no idea if we need a nuclear deterrent but if we do, it probably needs to be submarine-launched.

Why doesn't the Government buy a house or two in the countries where we think we would need to fire a nuclear missile.  House should be near where we would be targetting with a missile if ever we wanted to fire one. We send foreign office diplomats to live there as part of their normal job.  Unbeknown to them we build in a nuclear bomb - say hidden in the cellar.  Bomb can be armed remotely.

I think you will all agree that this is indeed a cunning plan.

And comparatively cheap compared with Trident.

Maybe the Iranians, N Koreans et al have already done it over here.
