A 16-year-old pupil has died after being stabbed at an Aberdeen school.

Police said another 16-year-old male had been detained after the emergency services were called to Cults Academy at about 13:30.

Police Scotland said it was being treated as murder inquiry.

Ch Insp Graeme Mackie said: "This is a shocking and extraordinary incident for Aberdeen and firstly our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who has sadly lost his life today."

He added: "A full and thorough inquiry is under way."

Aberdeen City Council earlier said it was aware of what it described as a serious incident

A spokesman added: "Due to the nature of this incident we will not be issuing further comment."

Cults is regarded as one of Aberdeen's more affluent suburbs.

The school is described on its website as a six-year comprehensive serving the Lower Deeside area. It has about 1,050 pupils.

Agree Neast correspondent although the school has a reputation for drugs

This must be a great disappointment to chit chats finest.

A fatal stabbing outside of Newham.

Judging by their lack of comments they don't feel their normal outrage about stabbings.  I wonder why?

Seems everywhere on the news is close nit

It would never happen here etc , it can happen anywhere

Posh kids can be the worst for seeing red as they aint been allowed out much , they will use anything to hurt the victim , even compasses and other objects in class should be under lock and key.
