Hole In One Gang - By John Carter
Report i_agree_with_nick • October 22, 2015 4:37 PM BST
Is that about those two blokes who bet on holes in one occurring at various tournaments? Back in the 80s iirc.

The bookmakers were unaware of how often they cropped up. Didn't some refuse to pay up?

It is - just googled it.

Man behind the shades is pretty interesting.

Great talent with some serious problems.

I don't like him but McCririck's book World of Betting was a good read.
Covers the Tote scandal of falsifying dividends that he uncovered.

Depends what you mean.

If it's 'how to....' books on betting then the Alan Potts books are great and still relevant. Nick Mordin's books are always worth reading to make you take a look at racing from a fresh angle and Jon Gibby has a number of books out on assessing handicap races on the Flat which I rate too.

For books on the general world of betting then I really enjoyed Dave Nevison's books and though his overblown style isn't to everyone's taste, 'Cheltenham Et Al' by Alistair Down really hit the mark for me in whetting the appetite for another jumps season especially.

I've just googled The Hole In One Gang and read a few snippets from it, it sounds a great read.

The Encyclopedia of Gambling by Peter Arnold was another good read although it was some time ago.

funnily enough the hole in one gang came into my shop which was a small independent in the Manchester area , he was a brash cockney character and was betting £20 -£30 a race on morning dogs , after a while he said " whilst im here have you any prices on this years golf majors for hole in ones " , luckily I play golf so I quoted evens ( generous ) , he suddenly turned aggressive and produced betting slips from his pocket showing prices ranging from 16/1 to 50/1 , sort of demanding I matched these , I just replied can you get me some , he stormed out , it wasn't a scam of such just preying on greedy bookies after easy dosh
