However, Paddy Power said it managed financial risk like all businesses and had a number of checks and restrictions in place to prevent certain bets being made.
"We take a 'one-for-all' rather than an 'all-for-one' view, so for instance if we're prepared to lose €2m (£1.5m) on an event, we would much prefer to lose €2,000 to 1,000 different customers rather than €2m to one individual," a spokesman said.
William Hill insisted the vast majority of their customers could bet what they like when they liked, but to provide competitive prices to its recreational customer base it sometimes restricted bets from a small minority of customers, mainly professional gamblers.
Other bookmakers declined to comment on their policies.

Bookmakers say they limit bets from a minority of customers to ensure good odds are available to everyone.

Absolutely laughable statement, completely contemptible.

Even more laughable, Fred Rescue. It's PaddyPowerBetfair claiming they lay a price to take out 2 grand.

C0ckoran would have an aneurysm if he thought his PaddyPowerBetfair empire were laying bets.

That's the time to worry when you get barred from your own bedroom.

Everybody on Betfair wishes they'd been barred from bookies.

@thegiggilo That was when the minimum unit stake for all bets was increased to 5p.
It was a move to reduce slippage/volume per bet more than anything at a time when bets were manually settled.

I was winning fortunes on them, not when stake was increased I always struggled to get them on would have to travel out to midlands area just to get a couple of hundred quids worth on,they weren't going in the pool and I was winning on them everyday.Would travel out 50 mile walk in a shop in the middle of knowhere and get the shake of the head we've got your profile and even showed me file..Shocked

you ever place those bets in Shepherds Bush around 1987/8?

I used to be a bookie manager for Hills 25+ years ago and there was a guy doing perm placepots and dual fcs in my shop.  In the days of 10p tax my shop lost 5 or 6 weeks on the trot and all but one of those weeks was down to him.  It was virtually unheard of to lose in a single week.  He was never banned from my shop and always claimed that mine was his lucky shop.  Remember thinking security would be going through my shop's business with a toothcomb thinking something dodgy was afoot.

90 Onwards books were still taking small stakes in 95/96 as I remember the placepots and returns from a few meeting most of the bets were on the aw,around 90-94 I was putting on for pete jones and steve gough, steve and howard and craig all the brothers are mates of mine since I was 12..

In the early days of the placepots steve and pete often took the whole pool as everyone doing them was a mug,so they would've battered the shops, the dual fcast doubles were the other bets we couldn't get on hills used to take them then stopped and also those 6 horse race tricast races on the jumps. They were the best bets ever, trouble is everyone started copying the bets as more punters were getting clued up on what to do think they phased out the tricast bets around 16 years ago.I remember phoing some through when I moved house around that time thinking I'd hiot a £1200 tricast,to be told after taking the bets we don't do them anymore utter w@nkers so was left with a poxy fcast instead of the 50/12 rag in 3rd making huge tricast

The probability was it was them as they were the most prolific punters in midlands area at that time the only pros recording races on video and getting tracks to send them copys of the races so doing their own sectionals especially on the aw.Myself and the two brothers were still putting on for him 6 years asfter that, they were the pioneers of punting in the country no one else was doing what they were doing so,anything involving toe bets where pools were involved and getting on in shops they were cleaning up.They were telling the trainers whether their horses could win at the time especially as the aw was a new thing and they were the only ones with an understanding of times...

except Shepherds Bush is in London.  88 was possibly before AW? and this was in the Summer.  My recollection is AW started off as a Winter only sport.

I was finishing college so unsure what year the aw started,i know 1990 was when I got involved in it that's when you could really take advantage of the shops, don't know when the placepots started either it wouldn't have been them putting the bets on anyway would've been hangers on..

If you are banned from placing bets in a  a betting SHOP (not banned from going in) and a few weeks later if you place a bet in the same shop, can they refuse to pay out if the horse wins? Obviously you'd pick it up elsewhere but if you didn't?

Knew of someone who was barred from betting with a certain company, [too shrewd]. He placed bets in another branch [not known there] and won quite a few grand.

Anyway he was found out and company refused to pay. A dispute ensued, but i dont know the final outcome.

Kenny

What if you're banned from placing a bet in a shop but somehow manage to get on and it loses. Can you reclaim the money as they're not meant to take your bets?

Thanks Blackrock, not actually banned from Ladbrokes, just the shops in the area. lovegod, that was going to be my next question. Wink

if you are banned then you need something in writing otherwise nothing could be proved and they are opening themselves up - that would then say about other shops in the area

If I ask for something in writing, it could open a can of worms. The manager who controls the 4 shops in the area told me I was just banned from his shops. I used to get £250 on Hugh Taylor bets if the price was right. After I'd taken about 4 grand off them they cut me down to £50. A few weeks later after some beers with a few ex work colleagues I put £100 on a footy match without thinking. Thought I'd shot myself in the foot and indeed I had. This was a year ago. Got plenty of bets on at Lads elsewhere.
