Im confused as i dont understand how they are an aid to make our lives  easier, what is the point of them ?

If you dont want to drive you get a taxi, bus or rail.

Less congestion, ie no crashes, unproven.

Is it so you can text, email and be at the wheel

I am probably missing something really big, but i dont see the point.

SOme of us enjoy driving, not late at night on road that you dont know but tomtom is lifesaver for that.

WHat is the real reason apart from google wanting to take over our lives ?

Reported Road Casualties Great Britain

Year    Killed    Serious injury    Slight injury    Total injury
2013    1,713    21,657            160,300            181,957

Looks a good enough reason to get motorists away from the controls to me.

Good for us.

The Yorkshire Ripper murdered fewer people than Harold Shipman, but it was still worthwhile trying to prevent any more.

I would assume that its all about avoiding collisions of any sort. They are very inconvenient, costly and expensive. Who cares how many do or don't die. If we can bring forward the technology required to avoid collisions etc, then we should do so.
Using your own vehicle is preferable to public transport for some people for many different reasons. Location, destination, time of day, baggage such as women or children etc. etc.
