I must go and have a look at the bbc site and see if this has been reported on too.

There are all kinds of restrictions on what you can and can't wear in British society. You have to take account of them every time you walk out of the door. To pretend otherwise is absurd. In France, incidentally, this woman would be unable to engage in any number of activities dressed likewise, such as accompanying her children on school outings. The French have taken the view that you've got to nip this kind of nonsense in the bud. The British have decided that anything goes. 5 or 10 years from now, you can easily imagine a contestant wearing a niqab. Is that what the British really want? Because that is where it's heading and this young lady is part of the advance guard, testing the water. And what message is she sending to other women who do not wear the veil? I am pure. I protect my modesty. I am not like you for you are impure. We are different and I am superior. Is that a healthy message for a cohesive society? The French are right.

You do sum it up well mobo, when I first went to Saudi in 1981 many of their women were happy to uncover their faces but this has tightened up as the nutters imposed stricter values in public life.It has been a fashion statement within Islam to emphasise their assumed superiority and the liberal left in Europe are failing to understand the trend.

Treetop Apart from some general veil wearing, in one desert area(where the women weren't even allowed out!!!) I had never encountered this general obsession with covering up. Of course in some areas everyone covers up to protect against the elements. It is fkn cold at night! Some tribes most certainly keep their women out of the site of strangers and even a bare arm is seen, culturally, as bad form. It is anathema to some sheiks to see women baring themselves on television. Totally against their culture. We are hundreds of years apart there for starters. Yet. You will hardly ever encounter better manners and friendliness in their own environment. Respect their culture and they will welcome you to their bosom so to speak. My experiences are limited to Malaysia, Iran, Yemen and the desert kingdoms UAE etc, if I can call them that.

Treetop. Perhaps that's because we know that their 'assumed superiority' is, in fact, wrong. Please don't bring women's fashion trends in as a political or religious guideline. Gok Wan will be gushing all over them!

Just back from Paris and place is just as bad as London. Police petrified of enforcing niqab law for fear of being called racist. Saw numerous women on champs élysées with full garb (eyes only) one even had Louis Vuitton head garb
Football club taken over, their greatest horse race now has Qatari national colours......place is a joke

You see, they let her win because she was the only one with some proper gear on her bonce.
Absolutely no bias from the BBC by the way - apart from that.
