Now I am sure you are right Poker, but I am a little confused.  Presumably you have chosen your words carefully, but does Ronald Reagan not count?

Afternoon, Rob.

George Bush Snr was on the ticket when Reagan won (Vice President).

does it just include vp as well as pres.  I am guessing Ford doesn't count because he didn't win an election.

Would it be fair to say ones chances of success are enhanced if a family member was once President...?!

Yes, the both the nominees are on the ballot paper (president and his running mate candidate) otherwise known as 'the ticket'.

Richard Nixon was Eisenhower's VP.

Apologies for the typos.  Apple iPhones have a mind of their own, extremely annoying.

not an unreasonable trend, potus is a job, you need someone who has lots of experience in foreign policy, the political system, and working with both parties, and so on, clowns like carter or obama may have some novelty "new plan" but leave a bit fooking mess.
those movies where some kid magically swaps places with the potus and does a stand up job etc, a lot of people don't realise these aren't documentaries.

IMO, it's an extremely ''unreasonable'' trend. And quite alarming if not frightening.

Also you 'run' for President in America but 'stand' for election in the UK

Completely irrelevant I know, but an answer to a tricksy pub quiz question when you need it.

Presidential elections are quite fascinating. In the media age of today I very much doubt FDR would have been able to get elected. Also, the televised debate of JFK and Nixon turned the tide in favour of JFK with Nixon sweating and looking very nervous. Weird to think what would have happened had Nixon been elected earlier than he eventually was.

those that didnt have tvs and listened to the debate on radio felt that nixon had won the debate, those that watched on tv felt kennedy won

the election was close with kennedy winning by less than  1/2%

kennedy was 3 cm taller

lol you must be the thickest bigot on the planet.
with an infantile outburst like that, you must be a liberal progressive?

wtf did dubya leave obama you tw4t?  Banking meltdown at home and Iraq and Afghanistan abroad.
The war in afghanistan was supported by obama, and the iraq war was passed by democrat votes. as for financial crisis, actually bush attempted to investigate fannie mae et al a few times but was blocked, the dems ran congress from 2006, changes including uptick rule removal were also done in this period, the tech financial crisis bush inherited was resolved in a year or two, the sub prime financial crisis has dragged on to this day, obama prosecuted almost no one and few of the guilty institutions were allowed to fail, in fact the regulations imposed favoured the large corrupt organisations and crippled or destroyed the smaller regionals etc because of compliance costs etc, not only will dodd-frank fail to prevent another larger crash, it will cripple any recovery in the economy (and barney frank was the guy who stood up and said fannie mae could not fail, right before it failed Laugh)

so what did obama inherit? firstly a war in afghanistan that he wanted, and an otherwise stable middle east, libya had just surrendered it's nuclear ambitions and agreed to reparations, even iran was prepared to negotiate after seeing iraq's move to democracy and the angbar tribes has wiped out al quaeda in iraq. even obama admitted it was stable, 7 years later it's all a shambles and getting worse.
financially obama will leave with a 20 trillion dollar deficit, zero percent interest rates, 93,000,000 non participation rate, and vast numbers of those who are working are in part time and low value jobs, and an increasingly violent and divided society. obama has had 7 years, 2 of those he held a super majority so could have passed any law unopposed.

what will obama leave? a new cold war with russia from ukraine to syria, a devastated middle east, the loss of dozens of allies and diplomatic options, a crippled economy where large corporations have a vastly increased advantage over small business, a sentiment of mistrust and anger, a corrupt and partizan civil service from the irs to the epa, an insurmountable national debt, and so on.

but there is a pattern of bad legacies. it's only fair to mention some others

under carter (in one term)
russian invasion of afghanistan and the beginning of the mujahideen
iranian revolution, the hostage crisis, islamic republic
oil crisis
recession

under reagan
end of the cold war

under bush 1 (one term)
1st iraq war, removal of saddam from qatar (but not from iraq)

under clinton
iraq sanctions which killed at least 1 million and reestablished the saddam regime
us bombing of sudan
failed somalia invasion
rise of al qaeda
bombing of the un and uss cole, 9/11 plot
putinisation of russia
drafted the iraq liberation act

indeed, kennedy got the us into the vietnam war, launched the bay of pigs, and had a nuclear missile crisis
nixon ended us involvement in vietnam and normalised relations with china, diffusing the cold war imbalance

*kuwait obviously, i do have a dedicated team of proof readers on chit chat whose full time job is to read my first draft and point out typos, grammar, punctuation. seems there are people who cannot comprehend a point unless the full stop is in the correct position.
**unicef and the lancet both estimated around half a million children under 5 died as a result of sanctions, and the saddam regime continued to torture and execute during this period.

Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 (jimmy carter) was what forced banks to make risky loans, it was shored up for 30 years with make-shift arrangements and work arounds by government and industry (and exploited by individuals and community organisers) until it inevitably collapsed, though the timing of the collapse was opportunistic, exaggerated and somewhat convenient.
