Came off bike on Saturday and reckon I have broken or fractured it.  Will it just mend itself?   Seems such a minor thing but don't want it to start mending in the wrong position or anything.  Trouble is I don't know if I have broken it unless I go to casualty or something and  If I have to wait for 4 hours in casualty then I can't really be fked.

It'll probably be healed before you get to see a doctor.

Careful what you wear down A&E as well.
Don't go in anything with a military look about it.
You don't want to be upsetting the staff.

Not good fun coming off a bike as I can testify.

I would have thought it unlikely it's broken, as the little bones are very  short, and the likelihood is that you would have dislocated a joint first,
but you should be able to feel it if that were the case.

Is it swollen as it would be by now if there was serious damage.

Put up a photo on here, for the medically clued up to assess.

Still should go get it looked at though and hopefully you won't be too long.

When I dislocated the hand joint on my thumb, by not looking where I was going, and falling on stairs the pain was so intense that I had no option than to pull on it as hard as I could, to get it back in joint.

Don't take a book, just your i-pad and then you can give live updates of the scene and progress.....Grin

You are trying too hard again facts.  It is the top two thirds of the finger that is bust, It is a bit swollen now and defo can’t bend at the top knuckle without a lot of pain.  Just a consistent dull pain that has woken me up a few times the last couple of nights, quite irritating really if it doesn’t improve tomorrow might visit the quacks.

First time I've come off the bike when moving AP in the six months I've had the boardman.  3 times I have fallen off at a standstill with shoes stuck in cleats.  Only thing damaged each time was my pride, god it's embarassing.

Me too rob.....once outside the hose when the chain came off and I got all in a wobble and couldn't get out of the clips.

Hit the wall with my head (thank God for a helmet) and gashed the ends of my fingers, and bled a lot, and second time did it on purpose to amuse the people sitting outside the pub!! Laugh

I fell off bigtime as a teenager on the bike I built for myself...

Spec was..."J T Rogers" frame with higher bottom bracket (to facilitate longer cranks).

"Fiamme" wood insert alloys with tied and soldered spokes

Tubular tyres that had the inner tube sewn in and stuck to the rims

"Chater Lee" chainset with 13 tooth and 17 tooth fixed gears (one on each side)

Lyotard platform pedals

GB bars and pillars and "Brooks" saddle

Centre pull brake (front only) can't remember the name.

I could lift the bike to head level with my pinkey, as it weighed next to nothing.

Came off on a downhill slope doing around 20mph.  Stuck in the clips and I ended up sliding down the pavement.

I only just missed a concrete street light and I could have been a gonner.

As it was I was hurt everywhere, including down below, and a group of ladies surrounded me asking where I hurt!

Incredibly I didn't break anything, and was lucky really, because the idea of cyclists wearing helmets was unheard of (I think) but vanity,
and pride in my hairstyle of the day would have precluded that anyway.

I hate to see the pros of today coming off, as they are not exactly well protected, and obviously under pressure to get back onto another bike to carry on!

yeah been some awful accidents in cycling, doesn't bare thinking about them tdffers doing 50mph plus on the downhill.  One of the most sickening was that Flecha into the barbed wire (google it if you like sick photos) I was going very slow and not a little p1ssed.

guessing you didn't have a speedo, but wouldn't be surprised if you were going well over 20mph if on a downhill, 20mph is a steady flat speed with no tailwind.  No idea what any of that technical stuff you mentioned means btw.

Christ,
been reading this thread and cycling sounds really, really dangerous .... and that's just the falling off stuff.

When you factor in getting hit by cars, lorries or buses, and dogs, cats, kids running in front of you ...

I think I'll just stick to wrestling cocodiles and the occasional spot of tiger shark fishing when I'm a bit bored ...

Yes rob, I was going much faster earlier I'm sure, but was braking for an approaching junction, and got on some loose gravel, and that's where it all went bad!

for a finger - yes, you should go. there's a range of stuff you wont be able to do properly if it resets in the wrong way.

toes, apart from your big toe, you probably can leave - so long as nothing is sticking out and you still have feeling.

rob....any chance of an update, as there are some very concerned people on here?

Well I am still going.  It has been a tough few days and no mistake.  It was tempting at times to throw in the towel, give up, let the unbearable pain win.  But no.  I dug deep.  I stood tall.  In summary my little pinky I can't really move it much but it is getting better, got my first ever boxing session booked in for next Thursday, dont really see the point in doing it if I am just gonna bust my finger up again just as it is recovering, but dont want it to look like I am making excuses.

Rob I broke 3 fingers in a work accident, While waiting for X-rays I found an article on Aqua treatment use in Germany for the last 500 years. After the X-rays the doc says you wont be able to anything with that hand for at least 6 weeks.

When I got home I tried the Aqua treatment, get 2 bowls one with water as hot as you can bear it and the other one ice cold. Immerse your hand in the hot for 30 seconds then straight into the cold for 30 seconds, do this 3 times in succession always finishing on a cold one. if you can repeat this once or twice more every day all the better. I was working with the 'broken hand' 2 weeks later!

Feckin wimps! Put an ice loly stick between your little finger and the one next to it (it's important it's the one next to it Laugh) and then bandage them up.
Leave in place for a few days then do as Foxy says but replace the made up splint afterwards. A couple of weeks you'll be as right as rain.

Go to A & E.
My brother broke his finger playing Gaelic football about 40 years ago.  He played on as he was the main man.
Now he has difficulty picking his nose.

Can bend at both knuckles now, barely any improvement Mon to Fri but the last 30 hours or so it has got a lot better.  Last footy game of the season(we have done the league and cup double) on Tue night and feel like I should be able to make it(I am the gk so dodgy fingers can be a problem).  Basically all good, can't wait for boxing on Thurs night.

did you try the cold water/hot water treatment ?

I'm sure it would help most injuries of this nature.
Report rob_dylan • October 13, 2015 2:24 PM BST
didn't try the cold/hot water treatment, thought it was a wind up.

Well it is bearing up well and I am gonna play footy in goal tonight.

What Is Water Therapy?

Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is the application of water to initiate cure. All three forms of water (liquid, steam, ice) can be used therapeutically. Advantages to hydrotherapy are:

    It is almost always available.
It is easy to learn and perform.
It is painless and has no ill side effects.
It is inexpensive and can be done at home.

The goals of hydrotherapy are to improve the circulation and quality of blood. This is important because blood delivers nutrients to and removes wastes from tissues and organs. If circulation is poor or slow, healing nutrients cannot be delivered and toxins cannot be removed, which causes degeneration of the tissues and organs. By improving the quality of blood, more nutrients are available for cells to use and toxins are managed more efficiently. General therapeutic uses of hydrotherapy include:

    Pain and swelling of injuries
    Fever
    Elimination of toxins
    Antispasmodic
    Constipation
    Improve immune function

Alternating hot and cold (contrast hydrotherapy) is a common hydrotherapy treatment. The hot application expands blood vessels, filling them with blood, and the cold application constricts the blood vessels, forcing the blood to move on to other parts of the body. Hot and cold can be applied to any part of the body that is inflamed, congested, or injured.

Sorry boxing, no offence meant.  To be honest by the time you posted it wasn’t hurting that bad and what with my little fight on Friday night I just stopped worrying about the finger, bigger fish to fry and that.  It would have been a funny trick to play where you tell someone to do some ridiculous stuff just to see if they would do it.  If it was a trick, and I fell for it, then I would have laughed too.
