Are they comparing like for like?

Do the home owning people of other countries have to sell their homes to fund their own care as well?
If you were paying for it yourself then you'd expect something better than if it were paid for by the state.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 12:04 PM BST
You only have to sell your home if you are going into a nursing home on a permanent basis don't you?  In which case you don't need your home anyway.
Report i_agree_with_nick October 6, 2015 12:09 PM BST
Some might want to pass it on to their children.
Report Dr Crippen October 6, 2015 12:11 PM BST
What's that got to do with comparing the different situations there are in other countries regarding care?

They're saying that UK is best for care.

I'm telling you that it ought to be better if we're paying for it ourselves. Which is nothing to brag about.
Report Dr Crippen October 6, 2015 12:12 PM BST
nick,

I think that would apply to 99% of people.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 12:19 PM BST
Well if the children want to inherit the house then they should look after their parents instead of leaving it to a foreign nurse on close to minimum wage to feed and clean up after them.
Report DIE LINKE October 6, 2015 12:23 PM BST
It's not even about care homes for the elderly, its palliative care for people who are terminally ill, you numbskulls!
Report i_agree_with_nick October 6, 2015 12:27 PM BST
I think you have a point, rob. But it's difficult to look after your parents if you have a family and a full time job. Also many people in homes will need specialist care.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 12:30 PM BST
ffs I didn't even read the article let alone the report that the article was about.  Just presumed the headline said it all.
Report Dr Crippen October 6, 2015 12:38 PM BST
It seems the very rude and obnoxious DIE LINKE is correct.
It's not about care homes at all.

Yes I know that.  but we were discussing care homes, no rule against that.
Report Dr Crippen October 6, 2015 12:53 PM BST
Imagine if you had to pay for your own care and then found you were sharing a care home with mostly free loaders.
Most of whom wouldn't even be able to speak English.
Then at visiting time you have to put up with their family's jabber.

You'd be the odd one out and the only one paying, with some of your money going towards paying for them into the bargain!
They'd probably hate you as well for being who you are.

What a way to spend the last years of your life.
You'd be better off dead.
Report Dr Crippen October 6, 2015 12:54 PM BST
These are the things you have to consider when you import people in the numbers that we've been doing for decades.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 12:55 PM BST
Then get your kids to look after you, spend the last years of your life reading the daily mail surrounded by loved ones and you get to give them all your hard earned cash into the bargain.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 12:58 PM BST

life is difficult.  does specialist care mean cleaning up after them when they p1ss/cr@p themselves.  Well anyone can do that if they choose to.  feeding them making sure they take the right pills and stuff, dressing them. Helping them on their feet when they fall over.  All very doable I reckon, you would probably have to give up your job or take a long sabbatical but it is worth it.
Report Dr Crippen October 6, 2015 1:05 PM BST
You've got the right idea rob - see them of properly.
They deserve nothing less than that.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 2:18 PM BST
Just be with them.  If you love them and want to inherit their wealth then get off your backside and do the hard yards wiping their @rse, cleaning their sheets and stuff – they did it for you when you were a tot.  People that don’t and let a philipino do it for 8 quid an hour and then moan that they don’t get to inherit hundreds of thousands of pounds get no sympathy from me I’m afraid.  Typical of some people to always want something for nothing – do the work then you deserve it imo.

For Christ's sake, don't spread this or we'll have thousands of Mussies coming here, blowing themselves up (and us) and expecting hundreds of virgins as their reward ...

ohh, I forgot, they already know.

I had the pleasure and it was a real pleasure to care for my mum who moved in to live with us after been given 3 months to live after being diagnosed with advance stages of Leukiemia @ the ripe age of 83 .
She had the option to go to an hospice and asked if she would be a burden staying with us the wife(whos support was unwavering) said shes stopping with us.
Did it cost us financially of course it did did we give a t@ss not a bit.
Most rewarding experince of my life
If you can find a way to do it , do so.

She survived 10 months and I never heard her moan or complain once. Wonderfull woman.
Report rob_dylan October 6, 2015 5:06 PM BST
Top words geoff m.  You(and your wife) put to shame some people and their "let someone else look after my Mum/Dad in their old age but I want to keep all the money" attitude.

My father has Alzheimers. He was looked after by my brother who has a fair level of medical training. My father doesnt recognize his family and has attacked both myself and my brother with chairlegs.

We are strong enough to restrain him, so he doesnt cause us or himself damage. But what happens at night when we sleep?
He can appear in my brothers bedroom with a knife.
We had a lock put on my dads bedroom door, so at least we could sleep with some confidence. We were told by the council that we are interfering with his freedom of movement, so had to remove the lock.

Only alternative is a home, coz of his violent tendancies. His house was sold to pay for the care,as the authorities grade people as to how 'bad' they are. It was deemed my dad was not dangerous enough, although he has attacked people in the home, despite being on strong medication. Things are not always as straightforward as you might imagine.

I'm full of admiration for anyone who looks after their parents in their final stages but I'd hate to burden my kids with that. If I wasn't married or didn't have a woman to look after me at that stage, I wouldn't want or expect my kids to look after me 24/7.

Thats harsh blackrock, hope everyone is taking it ok,not a case of manning up as alzhemiers is very tough on everyone,my dad has it also
And its changed my views on karma etc and day to day living becomes stressfull for everyone involved

End of life care in the UK is overwhelmingly provided by free market philanthropy, hospices, charities etc and relatives should get credit too.
Erm, there's one organisation missing in that list, the taxpayer provided bit which is the NHS.
Maybe Attlee got it wrong after all.

What we certainly don't want is people like Andy Second Place Burnham wanting to 'integrate' everything care-related, when the UK has one part working this well.
