My nan is 86, she is a bit mental but she a superb to talk to. love her to bits and the conversations are good.

Anyway, the she wants an ipad or similar. My mum her daughter are going mental about it, personally she would love youtube looking at old songs, she loves that stuff.

The people close to her are making out she would be playing bingo and buying crap on ebay.

I say, go ahead. The rest of the family want to save her from something, im not sure what that is.

Cant see the problem if she blows everything om bingo, family wont have my train of thought.

At 86 she isn't going to be able to post too many more requests. £100 or so to please an old dear and give her more enjoyment than sitting watching Bargain Hunt and Doctors? Of course she should have one.

If she dies next month one of the first things you'll think - stupidly or not - will be "I wish we'd got her her ipad".

I'm with you IS and RTB. Your Nan is entitled to do what she wants.
So what if she blows cash on bingo or e-bay, her money her enjoyment.
I doubt she will though as enough music and old films  to enjoy.
Aye, feck the killjoys go for it.

Definitely get her one, I would say.

Can't see her figuring out how to use it though, which is why it could be good to let her try one first.

Gave my elder sister a PC when she was pushing 70. Before that I got her an "Amstrad" e-mailer/phone.
She never got to grips with either one.

Bought her a DVD player and "30 Years of Embassy Snooker" DVD as that is the only thing she watches on TV.

We showed her how to use it, and it was a simple machine.

Couple of weeks later I asked how she was enjoying the video, and she said "It won't rewind".....Laugh

of course she should have one.

as to what to get her, it depends on who'll be providing tech support, which may be the most demanding part........

ipads are offensively overpriced, but they are designed for toddlers and everyone knows how to use them.

and as others have said, if she wants to piss her money up the wall on bingo and buying tat on ebay, so be it. it's her money.

get the large size. I doubt she will be able to go through the sign up procedures for gambling sites or ebay Confused

It will just be skype, youtube etc

But agree with Aunty Post, odds on she wont be able to use it by herself without prompting and it will just sit in the corner

My gran (now 97) got one a couple of years ago.  She also has an email account.  Sound enough upstairs I guess but perhaps waning a little now.  tbh not sure it was worth it as she often struggles to know what is going on with it and I have to inform my Mum that I have sent my gran an email so that my Mum will tell her next time she sees her - which takes the point out of it somewhat.  I think the idea that we all need constant access to interweb is not true, if you can get by without it then good luck to you.  If she likes old music and she can work youtube then good luck to her mind.  If she wants an ipad then get her one I reckon.  The reason I think it perhaps wasn't a good idea for my gran is that she wasn't specifically asking for one, it was more that my Mum persuaded her to get one.

I bought my Dad the "easiest to use ever" mobile phone about 4 years ago.
I think Michael Parkinson advertised them on ITV 4/Yesterday/Gold.
I think he answered it twice, never made a call on it, but most times when i went to see him, he was
trying to turn the TV over with it.

we bought mother in law an ipad 18 months back, she was worried about fraud so we set
it up in my name with my cards which need my password that she doesnt have

she uses it and seems quite happy, she still has no interest using it to buy stuff

first time shes used a computer and is proud she can use it  so its worth it for that alone

we help her with issues arising whenever we visit

Make sure you limit her accounts on the bingo sites, don't want her blowing your inheritance away.

We got my nan a telly with a remote control in about 1990, she asked my dad if she could phone people with the remote, dad said no.

She said she'd tried but the telly just kept coming on.
