Most of the rest is quite ordinary ,esp some of the independant labels .
brands that look very similar but are inferior in taste most of the time at a cheaper price seem to be their game .

Smoked pancetta Greek style yoghurt British free range eggs Manchega cheese Roquefort Cheese All excellent value.
Fruit and veg are also cheap, usually good, sometimes less so but you make your choice of what's in season.

There cheap ham is lovely. Mature cheddar is real mature cheddar. 1.5 litre fruit juice, double strength contains 20% fruit and is nice at 89p Sandwiches are nearly half the price of other retailers.

Have tried "Aldi" on four occasions, just trying to get to grips with how they do things.
The way things are displayed, and trying to match up the price labels somewhere above (usually) the products takes some understanding.
There must be some cunning German marketing going on, when you have fruit and veg on one side of an aisle and breakfast cereal on the other!
Then you have boxer shorts, and screwdriver sets, and foot pumps opposite confectionery!
In amongst it all are some good quality products, at decent prices, but how the hell it can be declared as "Britain's Favourite Supermarket" is beyond me!
I just verified that "Aldi" and "Lidl" combined, have 9% of the UK grocery market so, again, how can the above accolade be correct?

The layout is the same in each shop, once you know its easy unless you are after a pair of boxer shorts. Not like the main retailers who put fruit & veg at the front and the milk and bread furthest away.

Can't comment on shelf life of F & V. Is this an opinion, or based on some in depth appraisal, by people who do in depth appraisals?
What is cheap ham? Do you mean re-formed?
Double strength fruit juice with 20% fruit!!!
In all my years I never bought a supermarket sandwich, so wouldn't know what is a good price!
Don't get me wrong, I haven't given up on them yet, and I have bought some excellent "Bockwurst" (Germans are good at sausages) which make brilliant Hot Dogs, with onions, and their own Brioche rolls.

Makybe_Diva Btw, Aka, I like your new avatar. What's that all about? I love soaps
It's to annoy my celtic supporting 'friends' on here. Their supporters Liaison Officer wrote to them asking them to make sure they washed before coming to the match. Seemingly some of their ST holders approached him complaining about some people with really bad BO. True story and I'll supply a link (or lynx as we call it now) soon.

The main thing I like about Aldi and Lidl is you're not subjected to loads of marketing and special offers. The stuff is generally decent quality and very good value and that's it. There's no BOGOFs and prices don't go up and down each week. The checkouts are very fast and at the moment there's no self serve tills. Aldi chocolate particularly good.

Aged rib eye steak, the bacon which is better than Tesco etc extra special and is nearly half the price, Wagyu burgers are amazing, Venison burgers, the cheeses, Aldi chocolate got a mention but the Lidl Ecuadorian chocolate is brilliant.

I saw an ex-colleague in Aldi, a nice one, and said that all the classy people shop here. We chatted for a minute, and she gave me a free cuddle. Two weeks later I saw another one in Farm Foods ( it's a small town ) and tried the same line - she looked very embarrassed, said something about getting cheap food for her dog, and dashed off, no cuddle.
So Aldi is better.

I regularly shop at Lidl and it's hard to knock the value, the vast majority is excellent and much cheaper than other supermarkets. I think some people already have it in their heads that everything they sell is junk, so as soon as they taste it they've already made their minds up
99p for a litre of fresh orange juice (not from concentrate), compare that to what you pay for Tropicana and it's about half the price and tastes at least as good. There are so many examples like that

Aldi is one of those rare places in the UK where the different classes come together .
Although there are good times to avoid the place if you like a quiet life .

An elderly couple (I mean older than me) were parked some distance away, so I offered to take their trolley.
Before someone asks, yes I did give them £1.00.

It's all about opinion. Our shop there was disappointing. Quality not great but then saved a fortune.
Just off to waitrose to get our picanha steak for tonight.

coachy ... what about Royal Ascot ... you will find all classes come together there ... Members is the "Waitrose", if you will ... Toffs paying for overpriced Champers and poncy food ... all the way to the Silver ring ... The "Aldi/Lidl" if you will ... low life of the UK looking for cheaper/inferior stuff ... They take 100/30, thinking its better value than 7/2 for example. Mind you, you hardly ever see any muzzies ... I think they are turned off by hog roasts etc .... I'm sure when we are under Sharia Law, the Hog roasts will be the first thing to go ... They'll probably change it for an Infidel Roast.

I think it's a snob thing why some people don't shop there, but Aldi and Lidl do sell some decent stuff. It's like buying own brands from any supermarket, some of it is alright but other things you wouldn't buy again. Same thing with Aldi and Lidl, some of it is very decent and much cheaper. We shop there regular.
Recently there was a coffee survey with some so-called experts, and the No.1 best coffee was 'Specially selected Roast & Ground Ethopian coffee' £1.79 from Aldi. And they weren't told where it came from until afterwards, M & S was No.2, Costa and Starbucks 4th & 5th.

I do my main shop at ALDI evey week - but you have to be selective ! Some items crap and inedible (?). Bought some fish fingers (normally have Birdseye)...bought some from ALDI - inedible - don't know what fish they'd used - but tasted bloody awful...straight in the bin. The biggest problem I've found is ...as example, Maple Syrup (for my morning pancakes)..lovely and cheap & good quality ...go there next week...nowhere to be found ! Same thing with Parmesan Cheese ..buy some one week cos excellent value ... next week-nowhere to be found ! So most items really good value ...other items yuk ! But well worth giving it a go - just watch what you're buying from there !

I saw earlier on the Business News on BBC that Aldi are going to start an online business next year. First, with wine by the case followed soon after with other non-food goods. They've announced record annual sales today - up by 31%.
I've only shopped in one once about 10+ years ago and just bought a few items but was very impressed with my purchases. There isn't one near to me so I've been unable to shop in Aldi since - but I did have the opportunity of shopping in an excellent Lidl shop about this time last year for a couple of months and thought it an excellent store.
As previously mentioned; some stuff is brilliant, other things not very good - just like all supermarkets. The really low prices make it worth experimenting though.
I bought some fantastic fresh, Scottish diced beef from Lidl and also some Scottish very low fat minced steak from there last year and both were without doubt the best tasting products of their type ever bought from a supermarket.
It's definitely a store I would shop at again if there was one near to me.

I'm using Lidil more these days because there is some good stuff there that just isn't available elsewhere.
God knows why people bother with Waitrose and M&S.

They pay their staff the living wage as well, which is a good pound an hour more than the big supermarkets. Makes a difference to people on a low pay. Both excellent shops.

Aldi, do have special offers which is why they put out a little catalogue every couple of weeks. Some offers start on Sunday whilst others Thursday. Fresh figs are 69p at the mo but they won't be this price in a few weeks. The missus has swapped her morning Aldi apricots for the figs so Iam giving the bathroom an extra 10/15 minutes to recover this week.

I like Pink Lady apples and no decline in ALDI stock. Mince v good. Smoked yellow fish very good too. Olives to vitamin pills cheaper. Not trawled the thread so hope this echoes what's been said. Lovely shop.

I think if you're canny you can get quality at these stores and Lidl at the moment have £7 off if you spend £35 which is phenomenal when you think the prices are already pared to the bone. Not wishing to give the impression I'm an old soak but Aldi's Clarke's 66 Bourbon is both a snip and was rated amongst the top ten bourbons in an Independent newspaper article. Lidl have also got some good quality Shepherd Neame stout which makes Guinness taste like water your grandad has washed his skid marked y fronts in.

I don't have an Aldi near me but I shop at Lidls regularly. It's brilliant value for most stuff.
Fruit and veg - superb quality and cheap Meat and poultry - excellent quality and cheaper Dairy - all the well known brand names but cheaper Frozen Food can be a hit and miss with quality but some great bargains (once saw a 2 kg bag of fresh prawns for under a tenner ! ) Prepared meals (pastas, pies etc) - superb and cheap
disappointments include sweets and biscuits (lack of brand names and non-brand stuff is rank - Towergate choc digestives taste like shredded beermat compared with McVities (Co-Op and Sainsb often have McVs for a £1 anyway)

Bought 2 laptops from Aldi years ago , they were top spec but a German manufacturer and as such a bargain ,and both still going strong. Bought loads of cycling gear over the years. Lots of very good red wine and bourbons I have not seen elsewhere all at good price including the already mentioned Clarke's.

Absolutely superb, although the weekly shop has to be topped up with a few selected items from the big supermarkets.
Fillet Steak for £6.00-ish? In fact any of their steaks are far superior to any big supermarkets and most independent butchers.
Yes it's all about taste but off the top of my head, Granola cereal, Fajita making kit, ready to eat avocado's, smoked salmon, bacon, Greek Yoghurt, cheeses, vitamin C tablets (pretty eclectic shop, huh?) are way better and far cheaper than anywhere else.
Plus, as a bloke, they don't hang about at the tills. Get in. Get out and no dopey chit-chat from the staff, I mean what's not to like?

Cycling stuff from Aldi and Lidl is excellent. I bought a bike repair stand for £29.99 which was identical to one from Halfords at over £100. Problem is now so many people know about the bargain non-food items you have to get there early before they're all gone.

one thing that Lidl do that's a really good thing is reducing things that are getting close to their sell-by date by 30%. Some of the stuff, usually meat or fish, is 2 or 3 days short of it's sell-by date so still in good condition. A much better thing than letting it go virtually rotten at full price and then chucking it out like other supermarkets do

I knew I could get everything I didn't already have, from the nearby "Tesco Express", but reasoned that I needed some other stuff for the week, and it will be cheaper at Aldi anyway!
Didn't want to leave it till 10:00 am opening today so went to Aldi at 14:00 yesterday.
What a ****ing nightmare. Firstly trying to park in minute spaces with no room to "swing into a bay when there was one, because of entry lanes too narrow for two cars to pass and .....
got inside and it was like shopping on Xmas eve!
Complete stand off in the narrow aisles, not helped by two assistants with massive "pump up" loads blocking two thirds of the aisles.
Struggled to the fruit and veg and wanted Passion Fruit. They don't do them. Wanted mixed peppers and they only had red ones!
By now I've almost had it.
No Pepperoni and, ridiculously, German Salami costing half as much again as I am currently paying at Tesco Express.
I had picked up some Bockwurst that are fantastic and Brioche Rolls for other days.
Bottom line, what was the point, as I was going to have to go somewhere else anyway, so I emptied my trolley and went to Tesco.
Got everything I wanted, including packs of three red, yellow, and green peppers for 99p (including the biggest red pepper I have seen for ages).
All of that and a tasteful birthday card, of which, none at Aldi!
Oh, and three ripe Avocados, reduced to 85p each, and just ready for eating today.
So, the menu was Avocado Vinaigrette, Pizzas, made in my new superb Italian Pizza Oven, and Pavlova with Strawberries, Kiwi Fruit and Blueberries.
Will only ever go to Aldi again during the week, and only for stuff that they are good at, such as matured steaks, same as brands cereal and biscuits, and those fabulous "Bockwurst" sausages!
Oh and 1.5kg bags of frozen chips for £1.00, and some vino.

A bit of an antagonistic response from you there!
You sound like you are brainwashed!
Whatever you say "The aisles are narrow".
"Fresh food from Tesco rots within a day"... that is a ridiculous statement and based on what?
"Aldi is a food shop".... is that why they sell tool kits, and boxer shorts, and Christ knows what else, but only red peppers and no Passion Fruit, and not going to repeat myself any more!
I've given them a fair trial (four visits) and have been complimentary on certain levels but, as for "Britain's Favourite Supermarket", see my analysis previously!

Diva, of all the people on here, I think that you "know me" more than most, and I haven't totally given up on them, but it will be a selective, and weekday endeavour.
I really do think that they need to reconsider the use of these warehouse types of equipment, that allow for only the passage of one person at a time, in any direction, with opposite flow totally blocked and, where any shopper is paused at a display, holding up everyone else.

Sonko....some people would argue over anything it seems!
Calling someone a snob, and then deriding everything that person has said, is hardly help or friendly banter.
You weren't there...I was!
You say they are a food shop and don't sell birthday cards. Well I already knew that which, is why I was resigned to go back to Tesco. But then you don't like me pointing out they are not just a food shop. I don't give a flying (what you said) but was merely pointing out that they are not just a food shop.
The main issue was they didn't have the food products that I wanted ( I did ask btw)!
The killer was trying to get anywhere, with pallets on jack up warehouse trolleys, when the place was too busy for them. I never ever saw that in any other supermarket, and it would have been much more efficient for them to bring out produce, with smaller equipment, as they couldn't move either.
