When I was at school it was drummed into us that spelling and punctuation helped illustrate a grasp of the nuances of the language and by extension intelligence. What I've observed on the internet seems to suggest that either there isn't as much emphasis on such things now or that the internet is a democratising tool allowing pig ignorant dopes equal ability to foist their idiocy on intelligent people.

Which is it?

If you read you learn to spell correctly.
When I see spelling mistakes it tells me the person does not read.

People can find they spell better writing with a pen or pencil. Its not just hitting the wrong letter by mistake, although that happens....there is something in the pen itself that spells correctly and the keypad dosn't

Ashamed to admit it, but one within my extended family just can't get the "a" & "an" rule!

Eg "a Elephant" and "an Tiger"! Would anyone say that, as it's very awkward, so why write it?

The very physical act of writing with a pen will enable you to spell, it is the pen and its connections to   forgotten and dreamlike days at school.

Indeed Aunty.

When a staff member messaged me "do you no", I thought it was just a brain lapse, but not after the third time!

But then I realised it is a regular thing with others.

Also it seems to be not just in GB, but across our English speaking cousins.

In Halfords yesterday, and a note in front of one till said "Card only as can't open draw"!!!

Again that is not uncommon!

I really think that schools would be better off, cutting back time spent on such as "Chemistry, Biology, Physics, branches of Mathematics such as "Algebra",
"Trigonometry" and fringe subjects, such as I suffered, including "Latin", and preparing the majority of kids for the real world.

I've often wondered if there is the same level of ignorance, in none English speaking people.

If any of you well traveled guys/gals have experience please post.

don't most shorthands have a 1:1 phoneme:grapheme relationship, instead of the nightmare that is English?

It does seem to demonstrate that English is a bit of bugger to learn and read, as anyone who has taught a child should know. The sheer number of different ways of writing the same phoneme, and in particular that one grapheme may correspond to more than one phoneme makes it a royal pain in the arse.

It's less important than it used to be, mainly because of the advent of spellcheckers. However, I'm not going to lie, you look like a bit of a muppet if you constantly make errors with your spelling and grammar.

As I admitted, punctuation can be difficult but I do try.

Generally, if you have a particularly long sentence, it's pretty certain that it needs breaking up somewhere.

I wouldn't insult you by correcting yours, but here are four commas for you to insert where it looks right.  , , , ,

I have a DVD entitled "Eats, shoots, and leaves" which is worth a listen......

Bruce Springsteen songs were a beautiful lesson in not using commas. Words tumbled into words with sentences longer than any other writer, some lines as long as an entire verse of most pop songs.

Not content with not using commas Bruce didn't leave any gaps between the words eg "Atnightweplayeditoutonthestreetsofarunawayamericandream" that is how it is sung and can you see how long that song is, even longer if you put spaces between the words.

Even songs such as Blinded by the light which Springsteen wrote for other groups do this, Springsteens entire career is built on not using commas.

Report lfc1971 • September 23, 2015 10:24 AM BST
Slightly different thing but it is sometimes said you can tell a persons character from their handwriting.
Is it possible they have got this back to front and it is not the syle of writing that reveals the character but the writing style itself that has an influence on producing the character.

This may be why past generations were so successful. If you look at schoolwork from a 12 yearold then , and the beautiful writing, maybe the appearance of this on the page and the mental process required to produce it creates the person.

surprised you haven't been lynched by a chit chat tedium mob

personally i put the exemplary spelling of some chit chatters down to the auto spell checker on their pc, the enormous amount of spare time they have for things like typing slowly and carefully, the willingness to reread their own posts, and the absence of any distractions like critical thinking, imagination, logic etc.
a post on chit chat is hardly of importance and if the meaning is obvious or unambiguous it would take a very tedious person to remark on typos, grammar and spelling.
a doctoral thesis or similar which attempts complex notions might be a different matter

In summary:

It is important as it does illustrate intelligence, although the content and the argument illustrates intelligence more than the spelling and grammar itself.

There is less emphasis

very good post polybot, there is a type of person, one springs to mind (ok i'll name him Alias) who immediately jumps on spelling mistakes, but who has an almost supernatural abilitynot to understand what a sentence actually means...it is as if the words do not register in any logical manner. It is not a case of a difference in view which is fine, but when he corrects spelling and yet dosen't seem to understand what the sentence means its a bit much.

Using too many commas in good English is as common a mistake as using too few.

The text should be easy to read and flow along. Wrong use of the comma prevents that.
