Volkswagen admitted on Sept. 18 to fitting some of its U.S. diesel vehicles with software that turns on full pollution controls only when the car is undergoing official emissions testing, the Environmental Protection Agency said Friday. Affected are diesel versions of the VW Jetta, Golf, Beetle and Passat and the Audi A3.

Laugh definitely xmoneyx

I suspect they will have to recall all such vehicles sold and sort out their emission controls
very very expensive

recall costs are nothing compared to the fines theyll be getting

Where does the fine money go ?

Why would they have limited this to a few models in one market? Tip of the iceberg in my view.
Diesel emissions have serious health issues especially for those with respiratory conditions and need to be controlled. If VW are bypassing those controls what does it say about the company ethics?

Don't understand what they have to gain by doing this!

They are obviously capable of producing "clean engines", in the same way that other manufacturers are, so why make it selective?

Isn't the testing simply done by inserting a probe into the exhaust rear pipe?

How does the software recognise this?
By:

Isn't the engine revved when not under load? Perhaps the software recognises this. Measures to control emissions reduce engine power, if you bypass this you can claim to have a more powerful engine which is a selling point. Engine emissions are also used in this country to determine the amount of tax customers pay and there are incentives for businesses to have low emission cars in their fleets.

Sorry, I may be slow but I still don't get it!

RAC chief engineer David Bizley said: “Motorists on this side of the pond will be looking for reassurances that vehicles sold in Britain – which are subject to stringent European emissions standards testing – are not affected by today’s Volkswagen announcement.”

If this is the case, and the implication is that the tested vehicles are not being interfered with, that surely means they are capable of meeting emissions standards honestly!

So why in the US do they have to resort to such devious measures?
By:
elise
When: 22 Sep 15 13:16
they won't have just done it in the usa, they will have fitted that software to a model in some cases not just the cars destined for certain countries

i don't know the usa targets for imported cars but they might be tougher than european standards for EU made cars

the other reason is they've just used it as a massive marketing ploy, to be the best when in fact they are nowhere near

i'd lay odds that this isn't just vw, straight away they'd look at skoda, seat, audi, bentley, porsche etc

i remember not long ago audi got pulled for false advertising on something to do with fuel economy, reckon this will be a worldwide issue and not restricted to just the vw group either

Aunty Post - you know that NO2 emissions kill people?

elise - VW shareholders are going to pay the fines (not just from the US, it will be a frenzy all over the world) and the losses of those who bought their cars.  Who is going to buy a second hand VW when you have no idea if its ever going to pass an MOT.
By:

When: 22 Sep 15 14:53
dave, that's what i meant

shareholders, pension funds, or investments, car owners, through increased road tax or reduced values, new owners might get an inferior product due to margin trimming, job losses for suppliers that feed vw not just vw themselves, ultimately a few people lose their job but those down the line foot the bill

Aunty Post - you know that NO2 emissions kill people?

Well of course dave....Shocked

Already posted this (I thought) but it was lost in the ether (maybe I hit cancel)!!!

Anyway elise has pretty much said everything I said later and, aside from loss of face, the culprits will lose nothing (and that particularly, if further investigation finds fault throughout the industry)!

not sure about the "culprits lose nothing" bit - I can see someone in a US prison unless they can get convicted elsewhere and avoid double jeopardy.

As far as I could gather from the bit that I saw about it: The car's software 'knows' when it is being diagnostically checked and uses to some tightly-restrictive settings which give low emission figures. Once unplugged from the diagnostic equipment, it reverts to it's regular settings which give far-from-impressive results.

What a stupid gamble to take! As crazy as the Banking industry. Whoever told these people that they know what they are doing? They are just salesmen!

I think its hilarious and synonymous with the human race, look at the other story on bbc website today about the hedge fund that purchased a pharmaceutical company only to up the price of AIDS drugs by 5000% because they saw more profit opportunity than the previous owners.
Its simply rampant opportunism of enterprise and the politicians tell us we should all bow to it and continue to reduce regulation so they can get on with making more money....however they end up doin that seemingly.

Actually creating software to cheat the system is contemptible, its so contrived that it can not be defended, its like being caught with the proceeds of a robbery, and have the plans on you of how you did it

Would any customers have actually purchased their VWs because of the perceived and advertised low emission readings?  I have never met anyone yet who told me they bought their car (whatever the manufacturer) on this basis.

VW Are now learning the hard way what its like to be the world's biggest car producer,
Basically it's the curse to be number 1.
Every manufacturer that has held the number one title has been attacked by the automotive industry, I not defending VW in anyway but it is a fact. Look how much trouble the previous top selling companies like GM and Toyota had when they were at the top, never a week went by without a bad news story in the press. All car companies have a multitude of dodgy issues they go to extreme lengths to keep out of the public domain. But when you're number one your the main target.

not sure about the "culprits lose nothing" bit

For "culprits" read "company".

Considering the very many people within VW, who must have been privy to the information, I'm surprised that there hasn't been a "whistle blower"!

Maybe someone with an axe to grind!
