A truly great character, critic and railer against mediocrity in all its forms, the world is a poorer place for sure.

Bless you Brian.

For some bizarre reason I quite liked him. He was an utter snob, but with a certain style and grace, and he was really easy to listen  to

I remember one particular tv prog where they had a painting drawn by a chimpanzee... I kid you not!
Anyway, they took the painting to a couple of art critics and asked their opinion of it, not explaining
who (or what) had painted it. The pretentious guff spouted by these 'critics' was unreal, but then they showed it
to Brian Sewell, who stood back, hand on chin deliberated a few moments, and said 'It looks like it was painted by a chimp!'

A wonderful man who had an opinion about almost everything and a complete disregard for the art establishment in general. As a fellow Londoner I used to really enjoy his articles in the Evening Standard. The great shame was that he wasn't on television as often as he should have been where the wider public could have seen him at his pompous best.

Very sad news, and now we shall have to look through a very poor field of relative platers to find someone to take over as the Greatest Living Englishman.

Art, Food and Theatre critics are the most pretentious and boring gits in the world.
Brian Sewell was the exception. RIP Sir.

Opposed mediocrity in all forms of life and could be disarmingly charming if someone amused him. Lovely fella.

Thank the Lord we still have Starkey... although like many others I considered him fortunate to land the lucrative Thomas The Tank Engine gig after messing up the 1986 Derby on Dancing Brave.

in respect of which i'm surprised he employed a metaphor that high up the body...excoriating wit..it was a pleasure to read his articles or hear him speak purely for his command of our language as it should be written and spoken, innit!!Wink

One of the few people that were genuine and said, eloquently, what they thought.  I am ashamed that I frequently thought to write to him and express my appreciation, but never did.

RIP Mr Sewell

I quite liked him - bar his love of traitors who caused the death of people we would call friends.  But they were his lovers.  His artistic conclusions were spot on, mostly.

He was an animal lover - it's the ones who are cruel or indifferent to animals you need to look out for.

I have been to the de la war pavilion in Bexhill a  few times, mainly because of the art deco building and the sea, but of course its main purpose is to 'showcase' modern art and 'installations' -  Cry  All of it is mainly free to enter, why, because nobody would pay to see such rubbish.  It is usually empty, bar the employees!

Symbollically, most of us are full of rubbish no one would see.  Don't like the look of double lls.  We have to keep going in the face of hostility, fear, hatred, perversion (squared) and hypocrisy.  And fascist-spellers.

Bodil, why do you post so late at night?  Do you live outside of the united kingdom? How old are you?  Do you work? Did you work? What at?

I know you probably will not answer my questions, but hey ho, nothing ventured, nothing gained Silly

No surprises to most on here.  I post late because I drink - when my present situation allows (we all have obligations).  Thank god I do or I would melt into an amprphous mass of mid-1950s dance-music.

I used to answer more - but you've forgotten.

I don't have any obligations, bodil.  It is not obligatory Happy  Do you drink because you have obligations?

I don't think I have forgotten anything about you, you did not tell me anything! I just wished that you posted earlier because I enjoy your posts, but I am soooo tired at this time of night that my replies are mainly of the 'cat sat on the mat' variety Happy
