Just seen the review on the BBC news channel.

Did it occur to anyone else that Mark Kermode looks more like Ronnie Kray than Tom Hardy does?

From the trailers that I've seen I thought the resemblance was pretty good. Now the Kemp brothers on the other hand............

From the trailers this new film looks like it might even be a bigger piece of dross than the Kemp brothers effort. It doesn't exactly help sell the film to have a ridiculous title like "Legend".

Mind you, I imagine it has quite a way to go before it could be worse than 'The Sweeney' re-make from around 2012.

sk, I also thought the resemblance was pretty good - especially to Ronnie. I just thought it wasn't as good as Mark Kermode's. Laugh

I don't usually watch the film reviews on BBC. Maybe he makes an effort to look like the main character of the headline film every week.Laugh

I misread your post Nick, I see what you mean now. Laugh

I'm quite looking forward to watching it (although I expect to be disappointed) as I've read many books on them.

Wikipedia implies 1998-ish:
He presented BBC1's Film programme from 1972, becoming the sole presenter the following year. Norman's involvement was broken in 1982 by a brief spell presenting Omnibus. After having returned to the Film series in 1983, Norman became increasingly irritated by the BBC's reluctance to screen the programme at a regular time, and in 1998 he finally accepted an offer to work for BSkyB, where he remained for three years.[2] Jonathan Ross took his place as the BBC programme's presenter.

Which is all very well but I vaguely recall Barry Norman giving up because he thought thought Hollywood had lost its way. Maybe I'm mixing him up with someone else.

Legend has now very much been taken over by the interpretation of the word equating it to being something good when one of it's accurate definitions was as a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated. Which given the often fanciful stories which attached themselves to the Krays would seem an especially apt title.

Watched this on C4 on Saturday. Found it quite tedious and fell asleep halfway through.

The resemblance was to both twins was good though.

I thought it was pretty good and interesting enough, great dual role by Tom Hardy especially playing the unbalanced brother Ronnie (although they were both unstable !!!). But never understood why they called this biographical drama "Legend" (?), agree, it was a clumsy and ridiculous title !

I liked it, better than I expected, Tom Hardy was very good.  Certainly better than the Kemp's version.

I enjoyed it but prefered the Kemp's version personally, can't put my finger on why, maybe it was the title.

I agree about the title.  A better choice would have been the book used as a base for the film "The profession of violence"  by John Pearson.

Does the film show Cedra Court where they lived?  I bought my first property there.  The other owners were all orthodox Jews so I don't know what they made of the krays!  I think the krays were part jewish and choosing to live in this particular block would seem to back this up.

I must watch this film and the previous one as I come from Hackney and the lambriano brothers, who were associates of the krays, lived in the next council block to us on an estate.  My brothers knew them well but did not associate with them and the youngest one asked me out.  What a claim to fame, NOT.

That part of London then was very Jewish. Jews all gone now, replaced by Bangladeshis where they've even renamed part of that area Banglatown!! even the road signs are written in some kinda arabic script. also they dont like whities walking their streets.

Cedra Court is shown in the film.

There are still a lot of Jews living in Hackney (Stamford Hill is in the borough of Hackney) but pretty much all gone from Whitechapel, Aldgate, Stepney etc

Thanks.

They probably haven't gone from stamford hill because they are mainly hasidic jews there and they are the largest group of hasidic jews in the united kingdom.  The jews that lived in cedra court were, I think, mainly hasidic jews.  They kept on apologising to me when we had an owners meeting as they were all talking yiddish, I think.  They were the ones with the hats and the side curls and the women wearing wigs.

Yes. In fact, Stamford Hill is home to the largest group of Hasidic Jews in Europe.

The Krays did have some Jewish heritage and Ronnie went on record as saying he was proud of that but I doubt they followed the religion.

I had got it into my head that I couldn't watch catch up tv because I don't have a tv license.  That was because I read the bbc news website a lot and when you click on catch up there it reminds you that you need a license.  But of course only for bbc catch up.

I must get that book kenbo.  I have just looked up nicholas lambrianou, the younger brother who asked me out when I was about 15. He is still a criminal.
