A 13-minute TED talk from David Epstein on how and why athletes are faster than they used to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8COaMKbNrX0

Technology: on a modern track, Jesse Owens would be just one stride behind Usain Bolt.
Specialisation: the changed body shapes of athletes in different sports.
Genetics: I won't spoil the marathon example.

Fans of the doping threads will recall that Epstein wrote the book, the Sports Gene.

I'm not sure that can be anywhere close to right about Owens because if it was then that would mean that Harold Davis would have finished in front of Bolt.

What's wrong with Harold Davis?

Diet?
Training, both available time and sophistication?
Shoes?
Contemporaries running faster?

(Apologies, if already mentioned, as haven't got 13 minutes to watch video)

Nothing whatsoever Fred. Which is my point. His record equalling performance was a fair bit better than Owens own of a few years before.

As for White Sprinters,
I rate Valeriy Borzov (Munich 1972) in front of Alan Wells (Moscow 1980)
