this is ridiculous - its a footling issue, doesn't matter if you buy a rubbish car or a good car. You'll still end up going the same places, having the same experiences whatever car you drive.   Just buy the first thing that takes your fancy - and if that might cause offence at some point, so much the better

What Car?  was a car magazine of the 70's/80's which I bought/stole and learned the engine size, top speed , 0-60 times and cost of , every car on sale in the UK

All depends if you love driving..An Audi RS3 is an amazing bit of engineering 2011.25k+ if not.

Volkswagen Polo rather than the Golf maybe???

What I want is a car that is comfortable to drive, is reliable and will last for (say) another 7-10 years for around £10k cash. Taxi is not an option. Why a Polo Echo?

Just get any car. You'll sit in the same traffic whatever you are in

Vw, ford, fiat, Kia, hyundai , audi etc will all be reliable, refined and still working in 10yrs. Just get a decent level trim so it's nice inside

Never understand people spending hours deliberating over cars. Can get sportsbikes for £15k that will embarrass expensive sports cars and theyre hardly a status symbol when you can get a merc for a few £100s a month on finance

Zazu I hear you mate but after having what I feel is the most reliable car EVER I want another! I don't want finance, I want to buy, drive and forget about all that. With regards to deliberating, in my experience I have found that research is usually the best tool for buying

Certainly good value yes Aspro. Comfy, reliable, only thing missing perhaps is the sun roof but ain't complaining on that.

Buy a Mercedes, best cars in the world.

Not as reliable as a Honda though Johnny but a tempting proposition. One of my favourite options, if finances dictate, is to buy an old (British) Jaguar and completely rebuild her however; I still want a realistic option for day-to-day street driving

Rebuilding an old Jag would be a marvellous project. Just going back to Mercs, I've had most models and have never had any problems. You could easily pick up a decent C or perhaps an E class for 10K.

Thanks for the tips guys; I have 6/7 months before I make a final decision and I have no doubt that your input will be influential. All I want is a beauty that will give me many years of happiness for a modest outlay. Who knows? I may even pull in it

Go to your nearest Audi garage and test drive one..you'll be blown away.

There's 21 on Autotrader as I write Aspro with mileage around 50-60 and close to the 10k price bracket, maybe 11k - although some are SL500s and however beautiful they may be, you'd spend all of your money on fuel and wouldn't be able to eat.

Is there something wrong with buying another Fiesta?

My only advice (having learned loads about it over the last few years) is to NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES buy a brand new car, whatever you go for.
Just 18 months to 2 years old is pretty much the same and is MUCH cheaper.

I can't believe people still think VWS are any more reliable than the average car, maybe in the 70s and 80s but they have built some overpriced mediocre cars since.
I know I have had several golf gti and a couple of polo's over the years.
I quite like the new Jags plenty of car for the money or an evoke and disco sport, remember the state of our r roads speed humps and potholes everywhere.

Decisions, decisions. Firstly, thanks for the early input guys, I knew I could rely on chit chat and will consider all your recommendations carefully. Naydam; I love the Fiesta but I'm just looking for a change. As for the Alfa Romeo I nearly bought one in 2000 but after driving the Fiesta Ghia I just knew it was perfect for London's roads and parking.

Funny you should mention that macarony. I was recently advised to buy an older VW model as the new ones are less reliable but again, I've also had conflicting reports, hence why coming on here for opinions. You cannot beat live discussion on such issues, especially with around £10k at stake.

If you want something the same size as the fiesta then forget the polo get a Honda Jazz they are the best small car by a mile, constantly top for reliability brilliant use of interior space with the way the seats can be folded down a friend of mine gets is mountain bike in the back of his car. And because its an Honda they can shift a bit

I don't drive but get minicabs (which in London have to be no more than 5 years old; not sure if that is true of the rest of the country) every day so here are my thoughts from the passenger seat.

Vauxhall -- seem sluggish and sound a bit rough.

Citroen -- hard to do up the seat belts because they are placed further back than standard.

Ford -- comfortable; clear view; can rattle a bit.

Toyota -- as Ford but don't rattle.

Toyota Prius -- lots and lots of fancy graphics showing how the electric engine is doing: might be distracting at first.

Mercedes -- very nice but I guess if you own one, people might think you are a posh minicab driver! Can be a bit awkward to get out of.

Excellent quality and attractive styling, coupled with high entry level spec.

Never liked Vauxhalls; owned 2 in this lifetime and both sucked! Haven't considered a mini but have mainly bought Fords in the past (owned many) and loved them to be fair. I recently read an article on the most reliable cars and (as previously mentioned) Honda came out top-of-the-pops. Interesting to read the feedback on this car and it is one that is in my thoughts.

I rent cars occasionally. Two small cars I've been impressed with are the Toyota Aygo and Yaris.

Why would you desert Ford now after having such a good car from them? I own a Mondeo and I love it. It's comfortable, a pleasure to drive and has bags of power. You could get a 4 or 5 year old one well within your budget.

I know Foinavon; half of me doesn't want to but considering I've driven Fords for probably 30 of my 33 years driving I just feel like a change. Your post has now made me feel guilty

Sorry Aspro but you could do a lot worse believe me. I've driven some rubbish in the past.

I did own a Nissan Bluebird ZX Turbo for a few years; she was a beauty too but I've always gone back to Fords. The GLSi Sierra was my favourite of them all but had to sell her when our company started giving us company cars. On that subject my first company car was the Ford Focus on the very day it was released; everywhere I drove it turned heads for the first few weeks but personally I didn't like it because the all-round view was poor from inside. I've since heard they've improved this but once bitten...

You'll think I'm joking, Aspro, but why not treat yourself?  It's on budget.

Mine has the 2 litre Ecoboost turbo petrol engine which you won't find lacking in power. Thirsty compared with diesels though.

If you don't do many miles, secondhand Rolls Royces and Bentleys (like the one in the link) are phenomenal cars for the money... and extremely reliable.  Insurance is also fine for folks of a certain age.  You only live once, gentlemen!

I would have one myself like a shot, but live right out in the sticks and the country lanes are too narrow.

i thought your first post was pretty sensible, polo is closer in size to your fiesta but the golf is a better car

if you don't mind the badge the skoda fabia is not bad either (vw owned as well so under the skin it's a polo)

if you plan to keep it maybe consider an auto box, makes driving a doddle and as you get older you'll appreciate it

having said that just go and buy an f-type and fck it

^ AP is bang on the money,great cars and a seven year warranty which tells you the company is confident in their quality and reliability

We've got 2 BMWs (veiled showing off - no it's not, one is 10 yr old X3, mine is 2yr old).

Anyway, last year took my X3 to local Ford garage for MoT (trust them, I don't trust BMW dealer, they'll (BMW con-men) find lots of "faults", e.g. need to have air con re-charged ... err no, never have and it's ok).

Anyway Ford garage lent me a car for a few hours (had to have new tyres etc, and didn't want to wait).  It was a Ka.  WFT I thought, street cred shot.  But a great car, lovely drive, comfortable.

And I thought - I've had BMWs for 25 years.  I've been a mug.

Don't get me wrong - great cars - but they come at a greater cost.

I still drive an e200 class its done i think 230k it drives like a dream,i have had it since 20k on clock,it does from time to time need a spring here or there but the engine is exceptional,lovely drive get about 40+mpg on a run mid 30 divvin around get one of these for buttons.......few grand,leave you some change!!!

More than fine with Insurance n69 - I'm part of the over 50's club where insurance is concerned - Age concern is cheap!
