One of the closest moments the Nazis came to winning the war was via Rashid Ali's 1941 Muslim rebellion in Iraq. German air strikes and supplies, along with Vichy French support, nearly enabled the cutting off of the oil supply to N Africa.
An Indian brigade and a handful of RAF biplanes somehow saved the day, followed by bitter fighting as the Indians and Australians, along with Free French, a Jewish unit from Palestine and British special forces, ejected the Vichy French from Syria and Lebanon. |
