It's called family. Our grand children are 4 and 2 and we have them stay over at least 1 day a week.the joy and pleasure they bring makes me feel younger and connected to their little world.

I agree dragon we have made sure we don't burden grandparents with the task of looking after our kids. The same can't be said of my sister or my sister in law who seem to dump the kids most days

Over here in Ireland rent prices / house prices are absolutely mental forcing both parents to go out and work. The problem being also childcare prices are an absolute joke and unaffordable for so many that they need the help of their parents to look after the kids, it is not an ideal situation but the cost of living has got so crazily high a lot are left with no other possible scenario.

Been the way here for as long as I can remember, only changed when "we moved forward" and had that Celtic Tiger boom, things have just returned to the way they were, we are much more family orientated and tend to live closer to one another than people in the UK, if you move to a different county here you are considered a migrant...!

Good one Fred, must not be available in Ingerland either judging by the thousands upon thousands of inbred cants that appear on your shows ala Jeremy Kyle with their 10 fat obese cretin kids

A man should not have children if he cannot support them on his own wage, and then no more than one.

Common practice these days,  Parents have to go out to work, have to be helped by parents to buy a property now have to be help to have kids.  Kids living at home into their 30's still being looked after.

My brother is one of the silver surfer parents. He's in his fifties and his wife in her late thirties. He was looking forward to putting his feet up in a few years after his kids flew the nest until the bombshell was dropped on him. Which was interesting in itself but twins was above and beyond the call of duty. Now he increasingly resembles a shrivelled prune. Laugh

Re. An earlier post. If they weren't planning on having children, why did they not use  some type of contraception ?

My advice or what we do as Grandparents now, there has to be some ground rules - and we've only got one - quite happy to have him 2 days a week to help out and do our bit, but we can't be doing 4 or 5 days a week.  Last month due to circumstances we did have him for 5 days for 2 wks, but couldn't be doing that every week.

It is a pleasure to look after him a couple of days, but more than that and some of the enjoyment goes. You have to be realistic in what you can do and what you offer to do. Don't take on more than your comfortable with.

Double Whammy these days for many in their 50's is looking after the Grand kids and taking care of Mum or Dad as well as trying to hold down a job.  So be helpful to your kids now and if you're lucky they may keep you out of a care home in the future.
