I used to work (40 years ago) with an elderly lady who was called Mrs Dyer.  She was quite formal and when she answered the phone she used to say "Mrs Dyer here").

She never realised, but it made me smile.

Don't think you'd find many purists agreeing.

How good were Dire Straights ?

Pretty awful to be fair. Although they were popular for a short time about 30 years ago

Private Investigations was a top song. Gone are the days when a band could get to no.2 with a sparse, mainly instrumental track that didn't have a chorus.

Agreed. It was a good song.

Several really good tracks - they were class.  Richard Thompson is a better guitarist, singer and composer.

Alias, that would be very much disputed. I'll start with the late Gary Moore as being a better axeman by far.

The live version of Telegraph Road is utterly spectacular - 12 minutes+ of pure brilliance.

On Monday Brothers In Arms came on the radio when I was driving - strange choice for a radio programme (must have been Absolute Radio 80s) as it is such a melancholic, downbeat song, but crikey it was good. Really stops you in your tracks.

They were brilliant back in the day with innovative music and beautifully crafted songs.

The only problem is they became popular and the trendies then denounce them.

For any Knopfler fans who don`t know it already, check out this album from his pub band fun sideline, The Notting Hillbillies. Called `Missing, presumed having a good time`, it s `incredibly chilled out, and perhaps the most `gets inside your head` album I`ve ever heard.

Not a big fan but they were an excellent group, the one thing I always remember about them: They were the group that had to go on after Queen at Wembley Live Aid concert -  just after Queen had given one of the greatest performances ever on the planet !!!

Freddie Mercury would have been 69 today.

Don't think you'd find many purists agreeing.
Never mind the purists as a guitarist of over 40 years ...it's silly to try and compare Mark knopfler with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Brian May,Dave Gilmour,Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Peter Green  etc ...etc ...take it from me as a guitarist Mark Knopfler is up there with the very best !
Apologies to Hank B.Marvin for not mentioning him ...Wink

The video of Romeo and Juliet is so bad it is actually funny.

Watch it & spot the,...

Chains of silver, chains of gold, dice - exploding, different streets, crying, laying everybody low , movie song & many many more.

It is actually difficult to make a parody of it as it is so bad.
