but surely loads and loads of energy would be floating around if all the planets where forming,i know its just my crazy idea but has anybody ever looked into this possible avenue of science.
And the collider that they have in Switzerland that smashes atoms,why can they not smash 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom together and see if they get water.(or course they would have to be careful in case they caused an explosion but it would be worth it if they created pure water,in fact it would rock the very foundation of science if successful. ![]() |

the last time we were talking on the forum about meteors hitting the earth someone posted that the metal in a meteor turned to rust when it hit the earths atmosphere.
And a few weeks later professor Brian Cox (the sky at night) made reference to a question he had seen on a gambling site about meteors.so I guess if something is posted of interest it will find its way to the correct person.but I thought it was good the way he said he found the meteor question on a gambling site. so I guess brian may stumble over my new theory. ![]() |

Err.. this sort of thing has been thought about lots, you're not the first.
Focusing on the surface is a rookie mistake, it's a lot of the surface area but not a lot of the actual planet mass. It takes **** all energy to fuse H2 with O, it's an exothermic reaction, you burn H2 and it becomes H2O. Proof : Add match to baloon full of H2. Or watch the Hindenburg footage on youbube. The fact I have to explain this to you kind of explains how this thread is developing :) If you studied basic chemistry at all it seems like every other reaction produces H20 and/or C02. Burn hyrdocarbons (like petrol), and water is a byproduct, it's the steam in exhausts, and the CO2 was invented by god to piss off green people. The problem as I remember it is once the H2 (unstable if you want) becomes bonded in H2O it's much more stable, breaking those bonds takes energy but that's the exact opposite of what this thread is about. |

The problem with creating the larger atoms is how they are created, my memory of all this is they generally started off as he most basic (H etc), the hard bit was the creation of the higher elements - in stars. Now, obviously if all this crap is kickng around in space anyway then you'd think that it would just be a part of every planet, but I think it tends to burn off as atmospheres shed off planets.. I know exactly what you mean about comets filling the oceans it doesn't sound realistic, I agree it sounds mad to me as well. But maybe there is something in it that maybe any H2O originally around gets shed but the planet gets filled up once things calm down again.
I'm sure I've read other planets did have much nicer atmospheres, like water on mars but it'll have boiled off into space or something. |

H2O is pure water? To make it as a product I suppose it's not the creation of H2O it's removing the impurities.
But there is little if anything that's ever 100% pure. Even space, we call it a vacuum and people imagine it as that, but if you fly a few million miles into space AFAIK it's never a real vacuum, there are always the odd few molecules per cubic metre. |

They already do that. It's the salt that's the problem. And obviously they've though of it, and do it. Google desalination. You can do it industrial scale, or small scale. I think even lifeboats for pilots and so on can have small scale kits for it to get water. |

I'm annoyed I can't remember it but I'm sure I read of some survival desalination method if you are shipwrecked or whatever, no doubt involved evaporation .. now I think about it ... I can't remeber the actual method but Salt water + heat = dried salt + steam, catch steam, drip drip, drinkable water. So salt water in enclosed space with say cone above it to point with drip tray below would create drinkable water. Something like that.

I did not know,iam confused because there are parts of the united states that are drying up and the people are saying it is so serious that they have to ration their drinking water,it seems to me that there is a big market for someone that supply drinking water.
I am really not trying to clever or smart,i am thankful for your information. it is sad when you see people dying because they can not get clean water to drink and the supply could be there if the powers that be would act on it. |

Yes LFC I know they do it some places. Hot countries make it easier, though I'm not sure how much they use the sun, I would.
For centuries they've made salt anyway by boiling off sea water, the clever bit is catching the sater. I was abroad (I know, boasting :)) this summer on holiday, and you forget how ******g strong the sun can be nearer the equator. It's just like a blowtorch in the sky, trying to take your face off. |

Desalination of seawater consumes a lot of energy so it's not economically viable on the massive scale required for watering deserts.
There's not much water on the earth. The oceans are at most 5 miles deep apart from the odd deep trench and the diameter of the earth is 8,000 miles. Just a damp rock really. Water is only liquid in a narrow temperature range and is easily boiled off by the sun's heat or the solar wind. Only the position of the earth's orbit and the earth's magnetic field are ensuring that liquid water remains on its surface, at least for the time being. |

NOW,if you read foinavons post he explains what the scientist's say about water on the earth.and that is what they say happened in science history of the earth.So I ask,how come the water that they say came via comets and meteors did not boil off by the suns heat.it sounds like these comets and meteors must have hit the earth all at the same time,and they would have to have hit after the earth cooled down after fusion,and if we are to believe the sun give more heat billions of years ago it would mean the earth was warmer at the time the comets and meteors crashed into it.so I think my theory is more realistic.
