I think in theory it means you can be in more than one place at the same time......

...so theoretically at least....you could meet yourself in the pub and buy yourself a drink....

...so I guess you would never have to buy a drink again....or would you!!!!

It's an utterly terrifying theory. It means cause and effect can be placed at time A and time B where time B is an earlier point in space-time than time A. It means the end of free will. A gambler cannot possibly have responsibility for their own losses for example - because the outcome of losing is just as likely to be the cause of them being an undisciplined  losing gambler as a consequence. There is no way of telling.

There is an upside though. When there is a really dangerous criminal and it is desirable to bang him up for life, and the lawyer says they had a deprived upbringing, this in no way affects the desirability of banging him up for life because the deprived upbringing no more caused the criminality than the criminality caused the deprived upbringing.
The result is we should bang the criminal up for life, and we put the lawyer out of a job, and putting lawyers out of jobs is usually a result imv.

...so interesting...

..all these processes going on around us.......and within us.......and happening on the smallest of scales....

...but these processes have the largest of consequences.....namely sustaining the planet...and us.!!!

...amazing to think of the discoveries that will be made in the next 50 or 100 years.....

...things that will shed more light on realties of life and our surroundings that are beyond us at the moment.....

....if these quantum processes are responsible for the incredible transition of a tadpole into a frog by first deconstruction and then reconstruction.......and this process can be understood fully and harnessed.....imagine the applications it can be used for.
By:

.....and the same goes for the tree section......where he was talking about the quantum role in photosynthesis......and how efficient the process was......

...imagine harnessing sunlight in such an efficient way.

New particles being found all the time. It's like an onion skin tho, the deeper we go the more and more complicated it seems. CERN still isn't at full capacity so there will be more to find.

I didn't realise this was a series. I just watched episode 1 and found it the BEEB at it's best. I like Jim as a presenter, he communicates things very well. It's not an easy subject to get your head around. I can understand Relativity but Quantum physics is a totally different ball game. Things just don't add up on the micro scale but understanding it is the key to the Universe. For those that say money spent on pure science is a waste, just look at the digital World around you - we wouldn't have it if it were'nt for the likes of Max Planck.

Great TV.

Been reading about QP for some time now. It truly is mindblowing.

I love the studies done to show the world around us responds to our feelings/emotions.

One example was a man who had a DNA sample taken from his mouth.

The man was then shown various images on tv - violence, love, erotica etc. The DNA in the next room was observed.

As the man 'felt' these different emotions, the DNA reacted.

They then moved the sample...350 miles away and did the same experiment. The DNA again reacted to the man's feelings!!

They put an atomic clock to work out how long it took for the sample to react to his feelings.

They concluded there was no time difference at all. Shocked The reaction occurred simultaneously.

Michio Kaku is your man if you want a pretty good explanation of baffling quantum physics, hes got several decent books out.

They say if you understand it then you havnt grasped whats been told to you as non of the 'rules' that define it are rules that we can understand

sounds a bit like if you split a quark and take it to the other side of the planet and rotate it, the half you still have will rotate at exactly the same speed in the opposite direction

Well I tried to find 'the study' and all I could find was a reference to it from a book by a popular science-type writer. First it's a study by the army, so I don't know how rigorous their scientific method is. Second, if it were really true it would surely have been repeated in labs all over the planet in the intervening 20 years or so since it was conducted because it would be a monumental discovery, if true.

I was adopted by a quantum robin this afternoon. He followed me around my allotment and made me dig up young earthworms for him. His little eyes were black though, not like the red ones on Jim's programme.

I thought that robin/superposition thing had been discredited recently, or rather, no evidence found for it. I've searched for a link but I can find no evidence for that either. Typical! Probably read it in an alternate universe that has since disappeared.

he was a telepathic robin too. Perched nearby and looked me directly in the eyes. I could hear a tiny voice in my head saying "Dig, dig, keep on digging, that's it, that will do" then he swooped down and picked up a small worm in his beak. It's absolutely true.

It is truly mind-boggling, LFC.  Even Einstein called it "spooky shít."  Entangled atoms, when separated, continue to act as a pair regardless of distance placed between them.

And, as Injera also mentioned, they act simultaneously.

I shouldn`t imagine it means anything very much, the fact that we are floating in space is surprising enough in itself.
