Rather than an exhaust backfire, it could have been a spit-back through the carburettor, setting it on fire.
Had this happen to me with a motorbike once. |

The "Dutton Phaeton"....what an ugly runt of a car that was!

Tim called his cars after the first part of his surname. He figured that no-one would buy a Dutton-Woolley.
If you think the Phaeton is ugly, the amphibion vehicles are hilarious. There was one nice one I remember but it looked just like a 7. |
