Thinking of buying one for £65 to watch sports.  Any advice or pitfalls?

Don't expect it to be anything like Sky. Often the streams don't work, are too overloaded and unless you get a brilliant stream, the PQ is very poor.

It's amazing for movies using the Genesis add on, but sports are hit and miss. You can usually buy them off ebay fully loaded so you don't have to muck about with it yourself. But don't expect to suddenly be able to watch every 3pm kick off and box office boxing in glorious HD, the truth is, it never works like that.

Brilliant although haven't got live sports streams sorted for myself. I use the Genesis plug in for my movies and TV series, you can download Kodi to your desktop and install genesis to see the quality for yourself. I done it all myself - it took me around 2 hours so just buy the Stick out of Argos or whenever it's on sale and save yourself a few £££.

I can walk you through the steps but I've only ever done it once following a guide online.

It's been as low as £20 on Amazon but I paid £30. Kodi can be a bit tricky, I had to install an earlier version but overall it wasn't hard and well worth the money spent. I've had a Chromecast and NowTV box but the Fire Stick is by far the best.

You are limited by the quality of the stream but for Films and TV I have found nothing but top quality. As I say, I'd like to get my live sports sorted so if anyone could help I'd appreciate.

Ovalman,

Have a gander at this page. I like the p2p streams one, but there's quite a bit on there.

Sonko - no, it's the same as streaming from your PC but to your TV and with a remote control.

Thanks Treble, will have a look.

Why do people get Amazon Fire it's a pretty long-winded task getting Kodi on that....just get a box or HDMI stick of Amazon...check reviews first.

Treble said it all really. Sports channels/streams come and go....they are good for SD 3pm streams to supplement a Sky Subscription or for watching any game they don't show.

The films are hosted on multiple sites around the Internet some of them have been there for yonks because these aren't streams but hosted files the reliability is very good...literally click and watch....also good for American TV shows.

New to the cinema films take a while to settle down...at first you'll get streams filmed in a cinema with people walking past... or the film with Spanish subtitles or something equally as random. As more and more 'copies' are made the streams get better and better.

In Genesis, I find the in theatres section to be pretty useless. Have been lucky a few times though.

To make it clear, unlike streaming, Genesis works by actually downloading the file to a temporary folder in your PC. It literally erases the content from your hard drive very soon after you've watched that particular bit. However, it works so fast that it easily allows you to rewind and fast forward. If anyone is hard of hearing, it also has excellent subtitle options. It's not just movies either, there is a hell of a lot of TV on there. In fact, I have never failed to find a TV program on there, or a movie that was released more than 6 months ago. Sometimes movies ere released in the US before the UK. You stand a good chance of getting these before or as they hit UK cinemas.

If you want to make sure you will get a totally faultless playback, you can actually choose to download the file completely to your PC, and play it off your hard drive as opposed to watching as you download.

For sports, there are quite a few options, as I have posted above. The p2p streams work quite well. You get a schedule as to what's on. There's also sports devil which has a few. On a big TV though, the quality can be poor. You need to sit a decent way away from the telly.

The best way to get reliable streams to show all the 3pm kick offs is to subscribe to a decent, reliable IPTV provider...although I realise that this defeats the object for most people, who want these boxes so that they don't have to pay anything.

One example is ntv.mx, which has a Kodi Add-on, and costs 20 euro for 30 days access to the sports channels; you get loads of them from UK, Scandinavia and America, so never a problem finding a decent stream, and they have a lot of channels which come fairly close to an HD pic (though you can always tell it's a stream).

You need a decent enough internet connection to get the best out of it (I think they recommend 10 meg or better); I've got a 300meg connection, so never been an issue for me, but suppose it may be at the lower end of the speed spectrum.

Think they offer a free 3 day trial so that you can have a look for yourself before you commit, but you're only in for 30 days at a time, so you only need to subscribe for 9 months of the year (so comes to about £125 for the year).

Those things though are very hot on geoblocking and banning VPN services. Not worth the outlay imo.
