I was walking home yesterday evening , turned the corner on my road and started walking the last hundred yards home.
Saw a cat crossing the road carrying something in its mouth.
I picked up the pace, following the cat into the church car park. I hoped to distract the cat into dropping whatever the poor creature was.
I was making "cat" type noises, here kitty kitty whoosh hello lovely cat sort of stuff.
Brazen cat stopped several times and looked back - long enough for me to see it has a baby hedgehog in its mouth.
A baby hedgehog!!
I upped my game, the cat half convinced by the sudden attention stopped again.
Then shot off through a hole in the fence. With the poor hedgehog.
I failed.
Seriously considering carrying a high pressure water pistol.
Kenny, this is inexcusable behaviour.

Maybe the cat was planning to use the baby hedgehog to stick chunks of cheese and pineapple on at its daughter's birthday party ?

I agree its not very nice to witness such a scene but this is something in a cats dna and something they have no control over. We used to have an outdoor cat who would try and catch birds in the back garden eventhough it had plenty of food.. It would sometimes succeed. Luckily enough on a few occasions my wife managed to nurse a few of the birds back to health.
at least the cheese and pineapple scenario would have given me some closure.
It's very sad, but we should blame Mother Nature, not the cat.

No Kenny, we actually have another two cats. All strays who turned up at the door in not great shape and we were unable to let them go. We still have two left but they are quite old now. One of the hardest things I have ever done being with the cat who I watched being put to his final sleep a few months ago. I was literally bubbling in tears but it was the best thing to do as we had done everything to give it a chance to live a longer happy life.
I asked for the ashes and the veterinary clinic arranged a lovely box with its name on it. My wife bought a nice garden urn and we put the box in it and picked some flowers for it. That way if we move house we can take it with her. I had never any animals in my life until I met my future wife who is a big animal lover. She was brought up in a home out of a Gerald durrell novel with many different animals for companions.
That's nice, paddletoe. Strangely enough I didn't like cats in particular up to 20 years ago, until I dated a woman who was mad about them. She had 6, and I soon learnt what lovely creatures they are, all with their own distinct personalities.
I've had just 4, lost 2 and the first one, Cleo just stole my heart and when she died I was distraught for a long time. Susie, the marmalade and orange one died about 6 weks ago. Sadly I couldn't face the final injection with the vet in either case, but insisted on a sedative for the cats first, which not all vets apply, I understand, unless you request it.

My wife could not face the visit to the vets for the last time either. Your cats are very lucky Kenny to have such a lovely companion. They chose you and its never the other way around which is something I like about cats. I bet you treat everyone of yours like they are all your favourite.
Sorry to hear Susie passed away but you should take consolation she could not have enjoyed a better life than the one you give her.

Unhappy cat story-part 2
My daughter has just phoned us in tears.Her 19 year old ,one -eared cat Charlie, has passed away last night.Makes no difference, 43 years old and bawling her eyes out, with our 10 year old grandson for accomplyment. Bless em. R.I.P. CHARLI

Our two are now in little wooden boxes in the wardrobe, we paid the 60 or so quid to get their ashes back, the ashes are in a little plastic pouch.
Having worked as an undertaker I am deeply suspicious about the amount of ash one of them generated, I fear we may be looking after another couple of moggies for eternity as well.
