One of the films, the second I think, did very well at the box office. It made more than the James Bond film of the same year.

A catastrophic loss.  R.I.P. Inspector Blake.

The oafish, sexist, slightly vulgar, above all FUNNY 'On The Buses' remains a timeless antidote to the politically-correct drivel that passes for modern day 'comedy' and entertainment.

The three spin-off films are, I hardly need add, HIGH ART, apexing with 'Mutiny On The Buses", which includes surely the greatest darts match of all time. The only place I can find the match is on some Facebookers website here https://www.facebook.com/OnTheBusesTV/videos/10150092013843087/    Needless to say, the performances in this scene are miles better than anything that Benedict Cumberbatch and Russell Brand, for example, have ever been involved in.

The clip also features the infamous "Mr Jenkins' character…. a local 'public servant' way ahead of his time who saw no difficulty in buying a new pair of tights for 'Nymphey Nora" with money from the petty cash.

It seems almost superfluous to state this, but any decent country would be screening all three 'On The Buses' spin-off movies in succession this evening (no advert breaks) on ALL channels at peak time, out of respect for Inspector Blake.

Sadly, of course we live in Chakrabarti's Britain, where it is now illegal for any woman to show a sizeable portion of her magnificent chest in a comedy programme, for fear of some ridiculous and tragic minority group pretending to be offended.

Incidentally, Chit Chat heroine and serial marrier Queenie Watts has a small role in 'Holiday On The Buses' playing alongside that other sadly-lost comedy talent Arfur Mullard.

Ernie's ok as far as I know Alun. I might be biased but for a punter The Phil Silvers show is as good as it gets in a comedy series. If you can catch the episode Bilko's Day you wont be disappointed.

RR - is that the one where he doesn't realise it's his lucky day until just around midnight and he puts his entire bankroll on a race that is a minute or so late off and he loses the lot on a horse that is an unlucky loser?

I like the one where the monkey is drafted into the Army, and the one where Duane Doberman does some singing with 'Melvin Pelvin".

I could well be wrong, but my guess is that even right now 'Newsnight' is pulling out ALL the stops to get a Special Edition of 'The Newsnight Review Show' ready for tomorrow night to cover the passing of Blakey.

There's little doubt in my mind that the programme will present a detailed and fitting retrospective about "On The Buses", hopefully explaining to us that the programme "captured the zeitgeist of post-60s union-dominated Permissive Society Britain" and so on.

I'm sure the producers will want to bring out all their top intellectual heavyweights to add the depth and insight such a programme needs, so fingers crossed we'll hopefully see Wark, Lawson, both Greers, Peake on the sofa, alongside some token black poet/actor that no-one in the real world has ever heard of.

Surely the consensus of their lofty opinions will be that 'On The Buses' was a magnificently progressive programme, way ahead of its time, in which young women with large chests (or ones maybe wearing miniskirts and kinky boots) were deservedly given equal screen time, and there was even a black character called 'Chalkie'. A feather in the cap of 'On The Buses' if ever I heard one, and one which will surely receive a positive response from 'The Review Show'.

“I’ll get you for this Butler, you see if I don’t”

Enjoyed by millions in the seventies and will be fondly remembered

Rashid Ebrahimkhan, the manager of the Nursing home, said: “He still had his sense of humour, very much so, like he was on On The Buses. He had the sense of humour until the last.”

The funeral will be held on Tuesday 25 August at Our Lady Of Lourdes church in Wanstead.

About a month before he died I saw him in a film I hadn't seen before. Stanley Baker played an ex-army officer planning to rob the payrole in an army camp that involved him and his mates spending the day in the camp. 'Blakey' was in it either as an officer or as a Military Police, can't remember which - wish I'd paid more attention. Not a bad film, made about 1960-ish.

Just remembered…. Lewis also had a mercifully brief part in the Kemp Brothers execrable 1990 film 'The Krays'. He basically played 'Blakey' transferred to a WW2 copper's outfit hunting for a deserting Kray Senior in their charming bijou residence.

The entire ghastly experience can be re-lived here at around 12:00 mins in
