Media studies has a high graduate employment rate, surprisingly enough. Mainly in ordinary jobs rather than film or television, no doubt, but still.

My mates son got 2 D's and 2 E's, he rang him up to tell him how proud of him he was. Since when have D's and E's become good grades?

kenbo d's and e's at A level are passes. But not passes at GCSE level to be able to do A levels
So with those grades should get into a uni somewhere to do a degree of some description. (as long as 1 of the d's isn't general studies which doesn't really count) |

when I took my A's 82 not many A grades about i got zero 1 D and two o level passes got into Poly

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PHUCKING DEGREES HAVE THE WORD 'MEDIA' IN IT, THEY ARE WORTHLESS, NOT WORTH THE PAPER THEY'RE WRITTEN ON. IT'S JUST A 4 YEAR PISS UP FOR MIDDLE CLASS STOODENTS THESE DAYS, THESE DIVS WILL BE RUNNING OUR COUNTRY.

Back in my day I remember being told E's were good. Thinking back, I thought they looked like they were on something. Some folks just have no shamen.

The funny thing is that a hundred years ago, similar objections were raised to the then-new subject of English, and on much the same grounds: how can you get a degree reading stories? And of course, in those days, what is now respectable Victorian literature was read mainly by bored housewives, like daytime television now. |

at least it shows application and not a deadweight bum like myself who couldn't even be bothered to turn up for lessons/exams half the time if i was tired /or it was a pleasant day

When I left secondary school I had 2 choices, either get a trade or be unemployable. Decisions were made for me in Primary School.
My Son and Daughter both attemded seconday school and both are going to Uni. I attended an A level graduation yesterday for my Son and it was a full ceremony. I was so proud and was touched by the speeches. I wish I could do it all again. My Son got good results and is going to study Computer Science. One of the speakers said that graduates earn on average £100k more than average over a lifetime and the sciences considerably more. £100k is the difference between owning a house and renting one currently. |

£100k isn't much extra over a lifetimes work, if you say they work for 40 years then they may be £50 a week better off than average.

You need to be a bit careful with saying graduates earn more -- they do, but the figures are boosted by high-earning all-graduate professions like doctors and lawyers, whereas the non-graduates' figures are reduced by shelf-stackers and the terminally unemployable. They might also be based on a time when fewer people went to university -- now it is 50 per cent of school-leavers. (That's half, for those of you who never made it.)

I was lucky enough to go to a good grammar school (1960s)
options on leaving ... university if you wanted to be a teacher (or training college), doctor or scientist get a job if you wanted to study to become an accountant (mememe), solicitor, surveyor, insurance, architect or bank. My school was full of very bright kids (and mememe) and I would guess about 50% went to uni, rest got jobs. Now everybody goes to uni and most aren't very bright Education is the new industry ffs even degrees in accountancy!! My daughter did an accounting degree (albeit 20 years ago now) and the course and exams were about 11 plus standard. Then when they go on and study professional exams a lot drop away as not clever enough to pass them. Daughter was ok but a lot of mates weren't. |
