Mike Tyson in his prime, was the most ferocious boxer I have ever seen. He was evil personified in the ring. An absolute animal. Very very scary !

Now don't go off on one again Facts but in my admittedly not so humble view Tyson was one of the best on top fighters in history and one of the worst at digging himself out of a hole and was most fortunate to arrive in a division where even the scant talent had been hollowed out by drugs or Don King. He could frighten lesser men and that was a major tool in his armoury but take that away and he wasn't nearly as effective. Shame Tucker broke his hand so early in their fight or people may have been talking about him in the way they do about Douglas. All it was ever going to take was the right man with the right tools who was prepared to stare that sucker down.

EO is right, if a little harsh.
Tyson himself admits in his autobiography (an astonishing read, talk about a chaotic existence), that he was able to sense the fear in his opponents - but if he couldn't then he invariably had a harder night, even against some of the bums that he fought after he was released from prison. Douglas took away that mystique and while it's hard to argue that a sustained absence from the ring wouldn't have a detrimental effect on any boxers powers, it's clear that once the fear factor was removed Tyson was far less effective. He was no stranger to it himself, refusing the Lewis rematch because he didn't want another battering.
Probably a Top 10 heavyweight, but couldn't really be considered a Top 5.

I think given his ability to impose himself on most, his early combination punching and evasiveness and his finishing ability you'd be hard pressed to argue he wasn't a solid top 10 guy. I just rail against the notion that because he intimidated and blew away guys like Spinks that he'd have done the same to the best from history. Foreman circa 72 and Liston circa 62 would have flung him into the second row on their best nights, Ali would have mentally destroyed him before they got in the ring, he'd have struggled to get past a peak Holmes or Lewis jab and the Holy man would have taken him into the trenches at any point in his career and given him a hard night.

In exactly which weight category is this meant to take place inGrin

Floyd simply tainted his legacy by handpicking second rank fighters, overrated fighters and fighters past their prime to the point they stunk the ring out.

I an certainly echo Dessie's comments on Tyson's book. An unprecedented sports memoir, full of jaw-dropping (generally appalling) anecdotes. About as far from the typical tedious sporting (auto)biog as it can get.

That's a bandwagon I for one refuse to jump on scandinavian. Sure Floyd is a smart guy who got top dollar and he has chiselled plenty of the guys he's met but his record speaks for itself.
