Now that is a shame.

The passing of a giant.

That's very sad news. RIP.

It's Peter O'Sullevan, btw. (Wouldn't normally point this out but I think it's respectful to get the spelling correct)

I remember my dad saying that he had a horse called Be Friendly which summed him up completely.

Met him at my very first day at the races (Cheltenham Gold Cup Day 1971) and still have my race card he was kind enough to sign.

I was brought up on his BBC commentaries and his Daily Express articles, which were way ahead of the pack.

An incredible innings and an incredible life.

A TRUE GREAT has gone.

And without wishing to labour the point already made, Sir Peter was quite proud of the 'e' in his surname. Disappointing to see that both of the tribute threads I've seen so far did not have the correct spelling.

RIP

Racing coverage on the Beeb was superb when it was Sir Peter and Julian Wilson. Really classy; a less is more approach. Old school. Now, we have to suffer dumbed down, populist coverage of the sport with montages, and being relentlessly sold racing.

Sir Peter, Richie Benaud, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, Julian Wilson, Tony Greig… we've lost some outstanding commentators/presenters in recent times.

He was the guest speaker at a racing dinner I was at about 5 years ago ...he said he bet more on football matches these days.
I well remember Be Friendly;think it won a big end of season sprint at Haydock and he was commentating but he called the race as if he were entirely neutral.Think he also owned a good hurdler called Attivo.

whenever I hear of Peter O'Sullivan it always makes me think of John Rickman too.
I recall fondly as a little kid when my father would sit there on a Saturday afternoon watching the racing and
Mr Rickman would come on and gently doff his hat to the viewers.

Do apologise if I got the spelling of his name wrong.

The best tribute to him is to say that he was the BEST at what he did, and I can't think of a better racing commentator, even including the top American ones.

He trod on an ant in 1985....I think he didn't see it.

Sad as his passing is, he did have a very long and active life.

A very good commentator but Peter Bromley was the king, listen to Bromleys commentary on Shergars Derby victory on youtube, when his voice changes in the home straight as he realises Shergar has them stretched. Awesome.
