Read something yesterday about how few Americans have any knowledge about geography beyond their own country.

Worse than that was how few could name more than twenty five of their own states!

Always like a mind exercise, and I knew I could do better, I started on an alphabetic order list.

It's strange how the mind works as I was struggling a few times, for instance I had nothing on "L".

Just sat down here and I got it, seemingly without thinking.

No point looking for help as that defeats the exercise, but watching Stephen Fry last night, and right there, on his map, was Kentucky.
How the hell could I have missed that one? Sure I would have got it in the end!

So, I was about to declare to post on here and was stuck on forty seven.
That, plus Kentucky, and just now Louisiana, gets me to forty nine.

Not blowing my own trombone but I would say that is a fair achievement!

How many on here could better that (without cheating)?

Looking at it I have four beginning "A" and three beginning "C", and have a feeling it's one of them that I missed.

i can name all the US states in, probably, less than 2 minutes.  Have been able to do so since I was 12 years old.  There was a time when I knew all the state capitals and all the capitals of every country in the world, alas I can't quite do that anymore.

Just need to remember how many with each letter:

4A, 3C, D, F, G, H, 4I, 2K, L, 8M, 8N, 3O, P, R, 2S, 2T, U, 2V, 4W
Report rob_dylan July 27, 2015 12:08 PM BST
Getting the 8Ms often holds me up.  the 8 Ns is far easier - 4xNew, 2xNorth, Nevada and Nebraska.  I lead a simple life.

"Do you mean it would take you a whole month"?

rob, that was to Leopards comment of "as to the task....I could make £1000 on here in the time I would fritter away doing that" !

Seeing this was my first serious shot I think I did pretty well!

Interestingly the 8 Ms I found reasonably quickly.

Obviously a good discipline to know how many of each letters...

Is it useful though?

Ok, armed with the how many info I am one "V" adrift.

Pleased to say that focusing on that, I was short of "Vermont" but, again, how could I forget such a beautiful state?
Report The Leopard July 27, 2015 4:10 PM BST
More beautiful before the Europeans arrived I would wager.

Yeah I would struggle to name the counties. thing is I never know what a county is, seem to be new ones cropping up all the time.
Report rob_dylan July 28, 2015 2:55 PM BST
Avon /ˈeɪvən/ was, from 1974 to 1996, a non-metropolitan and ceremonial county in the west of England.
The county was named after the River Avon, which runs through the area. It was formed from parts of the historic counties of Gloucestershire and Somerset, together with the City of Bristol. In 1996, the county was abolished and the area split between four new unitary authorities: Bath and North East Somerset, City of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. The Avon name is still used for some purposes. The area had a population of approximately 1.08 million people in 2009.[4]

This being a case in point.  Avon would be the first one on the list and it isn't even a county now.  So if trying to name them are you really expected to quote "Bath & North East Somerset"

Always remember when I was a kid we had this quiz night at my cub or scout group and there was this one tw@t who just had to be the centre of attention.  So the question was "Name a US state beginning with 'K'"  don't think it was even his question he just blurted out at the top of his voice "Canada".  He really thought he knew the answer too.

Never mind all of this chit chat about naming all of the US states.

I used to live in the States and to amuse me (but only slightly) I used to ask any proud American I worked with to name the:

Most northerly state

Most southerly state

Most westerly state

Most easterly state

Easy they'd say, and then get it hopelessly wrong.
How I'd laugh (if I didn't think they were armed).
Report rob_dylan July 28, 2015 4:59 PM BST
Northerly = Alaska
Westerly = Alaska
Easterly = Alaska
Southerly = Hawaii?

I'd agree with that without consulting an atlas.

Good try.

I don't know the definitive answer (never said I did) but some reckon Maine (Easterly) Hawaii both Westerly and Southerly (but some contend Alaska most westerly).
