According to police the two British drivers of a high-performance Seat Leon Cupra had been racing with another vehicle when the car with the two young British men left the road. The vehicle then crashed down the side of the mountain and both men are believed to have been killed instantly. At its highest point the road is 8215 feet above sea level and runs across the base of the Grossglockner, which is Austria's highest mountain. Although it is a scenic route famed for its spectacular views, it does also attract motorists, particularly motorcyclists who keen to try out the frequent curves. A police spokesman would only confirm that the incident had taken place after the car had crashed through a barrier at around 7:45am on Friday morning before leaving the road. He said the pair started racing at Fusch and had reach speeds of more than 120 miles an hour before finally crashing on the Fuschertoerl. The Foreign Office said it could not confirm the men's identities but said: 'We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse, Austria on 24 July.

The spokeswoman said that a 42-year-old British man who had been racing with them in a Porsche at the time was being questioned after handing himself in nearby Sankt Johann im Pongau at 11.30am local time. The police spokeswoman said the men were both thrown from the car by the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene. She said the Porsche driver had lost the men's car after being behind them at a toll booth. They failed to turn up at a planned rendezvous with him or at a glacier further along the route. He then tried to call them with no response before driving back to their hotel and telling the race organisers, she said. After seeing the helicopter over the mountain road he contacted the police.
