I've NEVER even considered buying fish and chips on credit. So I don't think that was a stupid question Grant.

Got relatives over from the States so it was a big order. I very rarely go to the chippie these days and when i do i have mini fish and chips £3.85. Good value. However today i ordered a full fish and chips x 10. 10 x £7.35 = £70.35 and i was caught short by nearly a tenner. I had forgotten how expensive fish and chips are these days. Anyway my nephew who was sitting in the car had some cash and the deal was done.I cannot think of any other business who would charge you £70 for something but insists on cash unless there is something dodgy like tax avoidance going on. What is it with the self-employed and business owners in this country that they think they have a god given right not to pay their full tax bill? But here is the best bit. As my family a a bunch of tight gits i thought i better get a receipt here to prove what's what. I ask for a receipt and get a glare as if i had just asked to screw his granny ffs! I didn't get a receipt as they don't do them! Wtf! Is this business a VAT paying business? How do they get away with it? ![]() |

* no VAT on food

I wondered if it might be a big order, that makes sense now.

Plus, there's got to be a few little perks if you're self employed, you should know that!

Fish and chips are, imo, ridiculously expensive.
We ask for "a fish" as if we are getting a blasted whole one! Before it is battered it is a miserable offering. I probably get them half a dozen times a year, and always wished I hadn't as I feel greasy, and bloated, though most times get just a fish, or sometimes a small chips, of which there are plenty. You don't need to get ten portions of chips as, six/seven would be ample. Never ever get add ons, such as "Mushy Peas", as they want something like 60p for only equal to a third of a tin. |

The standard of fish and chips has gone right downhill. What used to be the best one round here has just closed after the new owner ballsed it up -- if he cooked it himself, the fish was raw; if he didn't, he'd got a terrible habit of engaging his "chef" in conversation just as he was serving, so you got free saliva in your food. The one down the road refried cold chips into cinders before it shut.
Credit cards? Too slow but I'm surprised more places do not get the contactless machines: faster even than cash. |

They started going downhill Ramruma when they started frying in vegetable oil. Most chippies round here are now owned by Asians so fat chance of lard making a comeback.
There's still a Cypriot owned one not too far away and we go there on the few occasions we buy from a chip shop. |

I said earlier that I think F&Cs are expensive but, for sure, wouldn't be paying £7.35 per portion!
Where in this septic isle are you? |

£7.35 for fish and chips! Is this the new betfair fish and chip shop that they were talking about opening?
What a mug you are. |
|

£7.35 x 10 = £73.50
not £70.35. How big a mug are you exactly? |

£6.50 cod £1.60 small chips £2.10 large near me. I took a girl on a date to a fish and chip shop in Islington. Don't laugh it's not as ridiculous as it sounds! I knew it would be dead but £16 for cod and £3 for chips was outrageous.

And discretionary 12.5% service charge on top added to the bill. ![]() Wonder how many decline to pay it. |

@Barry Conway -- imo the best fish and chip shop/restaurant is just up the road from yours (as the crow flies): Fish Central (off the City Road).
I'm not sure the website's been updated in the last decade though: http://fishcentral.co.uk/ |
